Just came back from a trip to Santa Monica and Santa Barbara. Our first stop was at the Ambrose Hotel in SM. We stayed at this quiet boutique hotel for 2 nights and really enjoyed it. There were 4 of us (my husband and I and our 2 teenagers) and we all stayed in one room with 2 beds. The room was small for all 4 of us, but for just 2 nights it was manageable. The hotel is decorated very nicely, in a Craftsman/Asian style. It is in a residential neighborhood, about 20 blocks from the SM Pier and Ocean Boulevard and around a 30 minute walk. The hotel provides a free shuttle within Santa Monica and we used it 4 times during our stay. There is a parking lot at the hotel which is free for guests (a nice perk, as most hotels in SM charge for parking). There is also free Wi-Fi in the rooms, which we appreciated as we brought our laptops.
There is free breakfast in the lobby, with not very much seating space. There is just one large round table, which was always taken when we got there. Other than that, there are chairs and small tables for 2, and a few sofas, and some outside seating space. The breakfast consisted of coffee, teas, juice, a few cereals, english muffins, bread and some very nice looking pastries, croissants and muffins. There was a bowl of fresh strawberries and some organic yogurts.
There is a small gym, which I used one night. There were 2 treadmills, 1 elliptical and 1 bike, a few weight machines and some free weights.
Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, except for a few that weren't too friendly. We particularly enjoyed the free shuttle, which drove to the shops, the Pier and to restaurants and picked us up too. We left our car in the parking lot our entire stay, and either used the shuttle or walked.
There are several restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, as well as a Walgreens and a Whole Foods. I would stay at this hotel again as I found it was reasonably priced, in a nice quiet neighborhood, has nice decor and rooms, and I particularly enjoyed the free shuttle service, Wi-Fi and breakfast.
