“Little piece of history at a good price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

This Motel is just super easy- fast check in, nice small but accommodating rooms. Huge bathroom, I would say 100% clean but I did find a hair in the shower recess. We did arrive early so this could have contributed to this. Wasn't enough to put us off. Great walking distance to Santa Monica and Venice Beach and there is a bar and a sushi bar close by. They do face a Jack in the box 24 hour restaurant, not pleasant to look at but you can't hear anything from the rooms. Over all excellent for location and price.

FYI The Wifi only works outside in the carpark :)

ok if you have a car, we stayed 3 nights, the lady who ran it couldnt do enough and this is the best factor of this motel. The positives, room spacious and clean (we were put in disabled room as no others left) if a little dated and run down in parts, needs a good update and lick of paint. staff good. The cleaning staff did the most amazing towel art, and left good quality soap and goodies every day.
Negatives: out of the way, its a good 25 min walk to the beach area, and a bit dodgy a walk at night. There is one grotty bar next to the hotel but this was overpriced and very loud with an awful band on both times we tried. (we like music but this was ear thumping!)
Biggest negative for us was the fast food place at the side, open 24 hours! You can hear cars all night and occasional beeps, its a stone throw from your bed! (3 car spaces Id say)
Cleaning staff opened the main window every time they came. This was ground floor with no fence etc seperating us from the takeaway etc, and as it could easily be broken into this was a worry if we were out all day. However im sure had we caught up with someone they would have stopped, but we didnt see them.
Its a trek to the main sights of santa monica ie the pier and beach. There is a bus but we didnt seem to be able to catch it any of the 3 days.
Finally if you think its close to LA its not, its a good car ride in traffic, (which is constantly bad traffic) it took around an hour to get to hollywood from SM but that may be the tiime of year or day we were going, wouldnt let it put you off though this seems the say everywhere in LA with the exception of burbank when we got to LA centre in 10 mins!
overall ok if you are on a budget, its good sized and friendly staff

Thanks for this review and for sighting our positive side. As for the negative sides, sorry but they are out of our control. In Los Angeles you always need a car. If you want to use the bus system is a little bit time consuming but from Santa Monica to West Los Angeles is 15 minutes with a big blue bus. Every situation in criticism one might ever confront in this business has already been faced by us in this motel. We welcome the good things, the not - so - pleasant ones - everything that comes our way. We feel lucky we can still elicit comments which keep us going - and strong at that. We are learning a lot through people like you. I can only thank you which may not be enough for you. Have a lovely day.

This motel is a tough one to rate. It's a 40's-50's 'Route 66' type motel with 14 rooms surrounding a small courtyard. Several similar motels dot that area as the route 66 terminus is about 3 blocks away. We stayed in #14 which is one of two facing the interior courtyard. The rest of the rooms for some reason, face the street or alley. Jack-in-the-box is conveniently located about 15 steps from most the the room entries. The courtyard is pleasant with lots of greenery and flowers.

The manager was friendly and helpful. The check-in process was quick. Parking was adequate. The rooms were small but totally upgraded. Flat screen tv, refrigerator, safe and the usual bathroom amenities were provided. New doors and casings. Fully tiled shower and bathrooms, (no bathtub), knotty-pine furnishings, decor and wood floor were used throughout the rooms we saw.

As for value, I guess that is very subjective. We don't usually pay that much for a hotel so I guess we were perhaps expecting something a little bigger? However, for that area, I expect that the rate we paid was competitive with the rest of the motels in the area.

In the end, though, it comes down to sleeping. The room we had was very quiet. The only sounds we heard were the birds in the early morning. We had great hopes for the bed, but by early morning we got to know each of the bed springs on a first name basis. We will probably look elsewhere the next time we visit the area.

Room Tip: courtyard facing rooms are the best. 13 and 14.

Thank you for this much detailed review about our little motel. We regret though that you intend to look for another motel the next time you visit Santa Monica. Anyway, it was a great pleasure having of service to you during your short stay here. Santa Monica has limited number of small motels and the prices are all high . What we offer is fair and unbeatable. We are open for any suggestions and we do our best to keep your stay easy and memorable. Have a pleasant day.

it's basic but you will struggle to find anything of better value for money...
at first you may find it a bit too basic...
walls are thin...
i can imagine that lack of air con isnt' great when hot...
and location next to a jack in a box isn't ideal neither...

but...
big TV...
wifi free...
worked in our room perfectly fine...
free parking...
super clean rooms...
super friendly staff especially management lady...
perfect location for beach and inner los angeles...

we liked it!

We appreciate your honest opinion. Rest Haven Motel is the oldest motel in town and protected by City of Santa Monica. There are certain things that the city will not permit us to do. Please feel free to tell us what else we can do and if the City let us do that we will immediately implement it.
We owe you both gratitude and admiration for sharing us your congenial in wonderful thougths about us and the business and the kind of service we give to our customers like you. "Big surprises come in little packages", that is, how you get the surprise in our motel.
Basically, as the saying goes, we don't judge the book by its cover. The heartwarming litany of superlative will push us to be more responsible and professionlly dedicated to the job that we embrace. Have a fine day.

We booked it online and when we came like 10 mins. later everything was ready. We could choose between 2 different rooms, to see which one we liked the most. It was a really nice service. The rooms were clean and really comfortable; nice bathroom, big bed,tv is good, etc.

Some minuses for some people might be that there is no A/C (only a fan on the ceiling - which for me is okay), and the WiFi is literally not working inside the rooms (at least our room), so you can only use it outside!!!!

The location was pretty good, you have a jack in box just next to it if you are hungry and it is possible to walk to the beach from there (will take you approximately 15-20 min max.)
All in all, I think it was a good sleep over for the price!

Me and my family stayed for 5 nights at this lovely Motel. My room was the number 10 with a full bed and one twin for my daughter, the other was the number 14 at the backyard with a full bed for my other daughter and her boy friend. Jannet, the manager, was so kind and helpful in giving us a map, pointing the places we shoul go.The location is excellent, since it is very near of the pier of Santa Monica beach. The rooms were very clean and with lovely sculpture towels, a goose, a monkey. So funny. There is a Jack in the box in front of the Motel, and sometimes make some noise. The shower was very good. There is a free parking in front of the Motel and free wi fi .The backyard is full of flowers and my daughter saw a squirrel. We recommend this Motel for people that don^t want a luxury place. The Motel is a simple place but we feel like our home.

We had a great night in this small motel and we liked it. You could easily hear every word from your neighbours but as we had a long flight, a long day of shopping and far too many beers that didn't bother us.

Thank you for the review. Glad you liked our place. We would like to extend you our great appreciation for staying with us and finding it worthwhile. I can understand your concern about the thinness of the walls in the motel without you directly mentioning it. We admire your patience and we will take this problem into consideration by pointing it out to the management. Have a good one.
