“Be opened minded and you'll love it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

First impression... Oh dear, but once you get greeted by the friendly owner you're put at ease. He has such passion in his hotel and the area. He wrote a map for us detailing the where abouts of everything. It's such a great location really. Santa Monica pier, 3rd st promenade, Venice. Everything. The rooms are very SOCAL and relaxed. Street noise can be a pain if you're not use to white noise however that isn't a problem for me. Decent sized rooms as this was my last stop before flying back to Melbourne I needed to unpack and repack and the floor space allowed for this to happen.
I love non chain hotels and this place for a family run business comes with charm, personality and some Santa Monica attitude. If you're open minded about the whole experience then you'll become great friends :)

My wife and I attended a wedding at the Victorian. The Sea Shore is right across the street so it's location is perfect. As far as the hotel is concerned, you only get one parking spot, if you stay during a holiday weekend it's a 2 night minimum

Echoing a number of posts, this motel is a couple of blocks from the beach, in close proximity to downtown Santa Monica, and a very reasonable rate for the area. But, it was not a good experience and as we determined later, we found better options. We booked one night with the intention to book additional nights after a side trip and to facilitate departing from LAX. We would told on check-in that because we only booked one night (vs others that were staying multiple nights) there was only one room available. This was a funny narrow room with a regular bed (not queen, not king). I am 6'5" so this would have been a problem even if I was traveling solo. We quickly came to the conclusion that another night at this motel was not in the cards. Be aware that the office is closed from about 8PM to 8AM the next morning.

Upon returning from our side trip, we moved our base to Manhattan Beach and found great accomodations at the same price as the Sea Shore.

Pros:
- great location (and one I would choose over being right in the centre of Santa Monica or right down at Venice Beach, as better to be able to walk to both than have just one close, plus a really nice area with a lot around). Also a laudromat right next door.
- clean room
- comfortable bed
- fridge and table
- free parking (great, easy parking too) and free wifi (we found it too slow though so used our on the go wifi)
- man (Tom or Ken or um something like that) was very helpful on check in and provided great advice.

Cons
- in our room there was apparently a problem with plumbing (a plunger was next to the toilet when we arrived), and sure enough it overflowed pretty quickly all over the bathroom floor, which was gross.
- very noisy - I had been prepared for traffic noise and not at all bothered by this (I love background noise, sleep great in the middle of Indian cities etc...). However, we could hear every step above us. Unfortunately on the first night the person above us must've had an early flight as they were walking around constantly from about 4 to 4.45. We were then woken up by a loud voice just outside our room at 6.30. Second night we heard sounds like people were having drinks on the terrace until 12.30 (loud voices) and then again woken at 6.30 by voices outside. These are of course problems that may not be evident on other nights or in other rooms (and I hope there are not too many people so inconsiderate as to stomp around packing at 4am...) - but in our case it resulted in us checking out a day early and going to the next hotel.

I would stay again due to location, price and other good points, but would request a room on the second floor and away from the office area. Also suggest making sure you bring your shampoo and conditioner as what is on offer is combined and fairly typical of those.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor and away from office (and away from road as well if traffic noise bothers...

Stayed one night at this hotel because of the good reviews it got on Trip Advisor.
Other than location this Hotel did not meet my expectations. The bare basics were included.
The room had a refrigerator but coffee maker had to be requested. The bathroom shower curtain barely covered the stall and the toiletries included were minimal. Towels were thin.
The bed was too soft and the pillows hard and the room was noisy (there must have been a motorcycle convention there at midnight).
I would not recommend this hotel.

We had 2 single nights here on our way into and out of the states. Easy to find. Office staff were all great though I think I dealt mostly with Tom. Rooms are basic but it's clean and comfortable and it is great after being on a long flight to walk or cycle on the sea front and clear your head. There were also great food vans opposite motel with great food in the capark.

Sea Shore has been our "go to" place for a convenient home base from which to visit relatives in LA for years. It's in a trendy area with restaurants, shops, beach, etc within walking distance. (Great breakfast place down the street called "Omelet. Nice little coffee shop with breakfast pasteries ajacent too. Starbucks on the corner.) Also free parking. It can be noisy on a weekend night because it's close to the street and a small motel but not a big deal if you want convenience. The shower curtain was too small and the floor did get wet as someone else mentioned and I had to pull over a chair to use as a bedside table but...oh well. It is family owned and therefore very hospitable. It could be cleaner as the Saltillo floor looked pretty grimy and needed some heavy duty cleaning via power wash or something. The bathroom was spotless which is most important to me. It had a little refrigerator which was nice. Overall, I think it's a great find for the price.
