“My favourite hotel, with one flaw.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

I stayed here for a few days after a conference in vegas.
The hotel is beautifully designed in a style which is best described as modernist meets art deco. The rooms are relaxing, furnished to a high standard and mine (a standard) had an ocean view and massive bath.
There is also a private courtyard with heated pool and hot tub.
The staff are great, and although it's not cheap, relatively, its ok for santa monica.

All in all, this is probably the best hotel I've stayed in. Or rather it would be if it weren't for the clientele of the hotel's outstanding roof-top bar. The bar is befitting of a film and I would thoroughly recommend a look. However, we visited several times and it attracts spoilt American rich kids in their early 20s, who are, we discovered, some of the most vulgar and uncouth creatures imahinable. Behaviour included:

▪Excessive and (when is it not) unnecessary 'whooping'
▪Spitting competitions onto the street below/penthouse balcony below
▪Smashing my glass and not replacing
▪Having conversations on speaker phone for no reason other than showing off
▪just generally making me despise them.

Obviously this ruins the bar, but you can hear them from your room, especially when running up and down the stairs until 1.30am.

Shangri-la is pretty cool and not at all what I expected. I typically stay at the Viceroy or Delfina, but both were sold out on this trip. The Shangri-la retains so much of its historic art deco charm - the rooms have great stylish vintage details and are very quiet. I had a Shangri-la room on the 1st floor facing the street. It was super quiet, dark and muted at night, bright and light filled during the day. The best thing about it was the giant deep soaking marble tub in the middle of the room, in a art deco mirrored box with windows that opened into the room. The bath tub filled up in 7 minutes and was DIVINE. I'll totally stay here again. The rooftop bar is fun for sunsets - get a bottle of Schramsberg Rose, sit in a stripey adirondack chair, and enjoy the people/sunset watching. Great pool and jacuzzi area as well.

Room Tip: Splurge for a suite, ask for one with a great bathtub.

The Shangri-La is a wonderful alternative hotel in LA. The locations is fantastic, stunning art deco rooms, beach views, a lovely restaurant and a fantastic roof top bar.

There's easy access to the airport (Hotel car available), shopping centres and other beach areas.

The pool area was stunning but maybe in summer I'd use it

Room Tip: Ask for a beach front room on a higher floor

This was a very odd hotel- because you can tell it wasn't built to be an upscale hotel. we had a two bedroom suite with a great view of the ocean and a small, pretty worthless kitchen. Stayed in the master BR with a huge tub in the middle of the room!

Excellent location in the heart of Santa Monica.

There is a tiny lobby but the concierges there are very nice. There are 5 or so steps up to the lobby so not huge-suitcase or disabled friendly. Free wifi throughout was a plus. It's not on the beach but a short walk across a highway overpass (that you can't see from the hotel, so it feels like you're on the beach!)

The pool area is a lovely courtyard. Very green and lush and so relaxing to go out to sunbathe or soak in the hot tub. They have a tent set up for massages and spa treatments but i don't think they had a traditional locker room or spa.

We ate breakfast on the last day in the lobby restaurant and it was delicious. Valet parking was always quick but you had to walk around the corner for the parking- and they probably should just let people park and get their own cars...also there was religious pamphlets waiting for us in the car the day we left! ha!

Thank you so much for your feedback.
Your comments really do give us perspective and direction as we strive to refine the experience we offer our guests. I'm happy to hear that you were able to experience our Luxury Suite. It truly is the grandest room in the hotel. The tub in the master bedroom really is something special!
We are also so happy to read that you enjoyed our courtyard area. We really get so much sunlight for most of the day, which is perfect for a Santa Monica Beach hotel.

Thank you so much for staying with us. Please come back and see us again. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back.

Sincerely,

Sonny

A great location 2 blocks from the Santa Monica pier and two blocks to the 4th street mall . The rooms are fairly big and clean . The staff very friendly and helpful . The Restuarant is good and there are two bars , the one on the roof top is great at sun set looking over the beach , nice place to have a cocktail or two . Lovely bathroom with a bath and the king bed was very comfortable . My only negative is it is a bit expensive . But we enjoyed our stay .

Came here on a family vacay. I cant complain, we had some nice days here, the staff were very friendly and helpful, I liked the location because it was in my favorite part of LA. It had everything we needed, allthough there was definitaly some noice, and the rooms were not exactly spacious, but they were really clean and I loved the bathtub. Would recommend this hotel for young people; it is not a family hotel I would say :)

The ocean front location is fabulous and this is a very cool Art Deco hotel, but it's tired. The roof top bar has a spectacular view, but most of the outdoor furniture and heaters were end of life. Our room was oceanfront on the 3rd floor; the furniture and fixtures were retro; the bathrooms are awesome; the linen and upholstery in our room was in need of replacing. The service was exceptional, right from the valet to the turn down service at night. The pool area is so 1929 California - very cool. I was disappointed that for $400 per night that there was no bar fridge or coffee maker in our room.....you really need to be an Art Deco enthusiast to feel there is good price value.

Room Tip: All oceanfront rooms will have traffic noise, so be prepared to keep your window closed at night.
