“Great private event venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

I attended a private event hosted in their Penthouse Suite. Guests could view the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica with sweet, fresh scent of the sea. This is the perfect place for private events with a bar area, private bathroom and indoor lounge areas. Outside there is a long patio with comfy lounge patio furniture and high boys so you could see the ocean. Toward the back of the patio, you have the perfect view of the famous Santa Monica Pier. Below, you can see their spacious and decorative Courtyard complete with pool and private cabanas. The hotel was built in 1939, designed with Art Deco elegance and reminds you of old Hollywood glamour. The catering department can make your party a success with perfectly paired appetizers and drinks. On this evening, they served a bunch of items that could be eaten for breakfast but also presented as fanciful hors d'oeuvres. The Dining Room features The Buttermilk Truck’s Red Velvet Pancakes on the brunch menu. Next to the Penthouse Suite, Hotel Shangri-La also has a rooftop bar, Suite 700, showcasing beautiful sunsets and world-class mixology.

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel, although frankly the outer appearance appeared a little dated - it had a less luxurious feel than we got from the pictures on the website. We had the terrace suite, which was lovely and large enough for our party of 4. We were first given a much smaller suite, with not enough beds for all of us, this was rectified the next day without much bother. The customer service was really excellent - staff responded quickly and promptly to our requests. The location is really good, right around the corner from the 3rd Street Promenade, and the steps to the beach. Excellent comfortable beds and bedding, and jacuzzi in the bath room. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool. We also loved the rooftop bar, with great views over the ocean. All in all, I'd certainly recommend it.

Room Tip: Only the terrace suites seem to have some sort of balcony, where you can sit outside. Not sure wheth...

Stayed here at the end our Route 66 trip in May 2013. Although a luxury hotel, it had fewer amenities than some of the small chain hotels on our trip and didn't really live up to it's hype. Staff were the outstanding feature - particularly in Reception. Rooftop bar is worth visiting (for the view) but it gets very crowded. See through bathroom is a very strange arrangement! Didn't sample the food there as it was so expensive. Great for walking to Santa Monica Pier.

My daughter and I were upgraded to a two bedroom suite overlooking the Pacific. She wants to stay forever. (I think I cold live here happily forever.)
front desk was great.
Didn't have any of the issues with noise others had reported
Can't recommend this more strongly.

It was a two night stay only , but I can tell the room was very good, clean and spacious, full kitchen amenities, although the fridge is smaller than usual (countertop size only). Service was very kindly and efficient also. View is great oceanfront. Location is very good. Easy walking acess to the 3rd street with several shops and restaurants around. Pier is a little far but acessible walking. Was on the 2nd floor and there was some noise from the street, but not so bad.

This is one of the beautiful hotels in the world, we felt as though the hotel was designed for us! My husband and I got a room with a full kitchen. The room was not only gorgeous and fully loaded, it had a lovely ocean view. My only complaint is that there was no ice machine so we had to call the front desk to have them deliver ice. The staff is very professional and the bar tenders were amazing. We came here to stay 3 nights for our wedding anniversary, we will be back for sure! The staff was helpful and always willing to give suggestions on where to eat and what to visit. The parking valet attendant, Jesus, is a real class act. We also think we saw bruce willis at the pool...we can not confirm nor deny these rumors.

Room Tip: If you like to cook get the full kitchen, totally worth it especially if you come here saturday or w...

This was definitely my first choice when staying in Santa Monica and I was a guest in the hotel over many years. What attracted me to it in the past beside the front line location overlooking the ocean was the very spacious rooms and the fantastic art deco style. Yes some of the furniture was tired but the ambiance and style made up for that. The hotel was renovated about 3 years ago - the rooms are smaller and modern granted with much better equipment , but for me the hotel lost its charm. The location is great and you are a three minute walk from Third Avenue with all the shopping you need, 2 cinema’s, a mall, plenty of eateries and the famed street performers. Santa Monica Pier is about 10 minutes walk.

I usually stay in a one bedroom suite which costs me US$385 before tax. You get a spacious living room and a small dining area with an open plan kitchenette and a well proportioned bedroom with a comfortable king size bed. The rooms are clean and the furniture is modern. The hotel is one of the few in this area with a car park.
