“Great location and nice room.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

We stayed at the Shangri-La over Memorial Day weekend with our two kids in a 2-bedroom, 2-bath suite with a partial view of the ocean. The rooms were spacious with great modern/art deco decor. The original windows were insulated with a second set of windows to keep out the street noise. There is a great gym space, a small heated pool, a hot tub, and very happening rooftop bar. The front desk was able to get us a reservation last minute at the Blue Plate Oysterette, which we loved. The breakfast at the hotel was excellent. The hotel is across the street from the beach and bike rental, and two blocks from the promenade--a perfect location.

After much deliberation, this was our hotel of choice for our wedding day, and we are very happy with our decision!

We decided to go with the Rock N Roll Suite and it was such a fun experience!

Check-in felt a little chaotic as the lobby is fairly small and there was a bit of construction going on when we arrived, but the rest of the time it was more peaceful. We were checked in quickly and bell services picked up our bags before we even had our keys.

The suite itself was beautiful. It was very private, requiring an extra entrance to access it (and thus removing any noise from the bar across the hall). We had a sprawling view of Santa Monica Beach from our huge wrap-around balcony and the sunset from here was absolutely beautiful.

The room was a bit of an awkward shape with it being round and on the corner, but we still had a number of our guests visit us there the day before our wedding and hang out on the balcony. We shared the same balcony as the rooftop bar, but our section was roped off and we had no issues with the patrons there.

Housekeeping staff were some of the friendliest I have ever encountered, as was the guy who delivered our room service.

The hotel is quite old but this really only showed itself through the old-style window latches. Our suite had dedicated wi-fi with no password and the shower was fantastic (though a little comical that it can fit 8 people). We were disappointed by the lack of a bathtub in this suite, but all of the other rooms have one. Our bed was one of the comfiest we have ever had. The clean, fresh look of the room was a perfect backdrop for my getting ready photos!

Another member of our party booked a basic room at the hotel, which was the smallest hotel room I have ever seen! It seems a little overpriced for the size you get, but it did have a very nice large bathtub (three of us posed for a photo in it and we could have fit a few more!).

We'd probably never stay there again because of the price, but are so happy this is what we chose to splurge on for our special day!

Room Tip: Spend the extra money for a suite; the lowest price-point rooms are very cramped.

My family (2 adults,2 children) recently stayed here for a 4 night stop over in LA. The room was gorgeous and also very comfortable and clean. The reception staff were extremely helpful especially Sonny and Charmian. Sonny was very concerned and helpful when I had to take our son to the hospital (for a non urgent matter) as was their in-house driver Chokri. Apart from taking us to the nearest hospital, we used his Limo service for a trip to Universal Studios and the Airport. He proved to be very kind, respectful and considerate and I would not hesitate to recommend his driving services to others.

This is a wonderful hotel! The rooms are spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the ambiance is relaxed yet elegant. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the Santa Monica fresh market is steps from the door - a plus if you are staying in one of the hotel's rooms with a kitchen. The location is perfect for all attractions, and yet the rooms are very quiet due to quite effective double-glazing on the windows. The outdoor bar on the top of the hotel is extremely pleasant, no matter what the weather, and the hotel's restaurant on the first floor also offers nice food and exceptional views. There were absolutely no negatives about this place. Highly recommended.

I met up with colleagues at the Shangri-La, after one recommended we head to the rooftop bar for drinks at sunset. What a treat! Wonderful wine and beverage selection, attentive service, good snacks, friendly people! Walked to nearby Sugarfish sushi restaurant afterward, and would not have changed a thing. Perfect evening!

What a nice stay, shopping around the corner, restaurants up and down the street and people watching for days. Right across the street from the parkway for an amazing evening stroll. The only negative is the noise, very busy road so it can be noisy until the city falls asleep but I think everything else outweighs the noise...just lovely

Overall a good hotel in a great location and we would revisit, but ... We arrived after dark by road from the south east side and there didn't appear to be any hotel signage. We missed the hotel and the car park. Signage to the car park could also be improved. $34 a day for insecure parking is a bit much.
Both of the valet drivers were friendly, fast and very efficient. Accessing reception through the front steps is impossible in a wheelchair and difficult with heavy luggage. There is a side ramp but I didn't notice any directional signage. Reception was friendly, fast and efficient. We were upgraded to the "production room" which was good. The rooms are smallish and the showers, lighting, and bathroom screens are all a little strange as reported by others on Trip Advisor. Everything was spotlessly clean but we did miss the coffee maker in the room. The roof top bar was very busy and the bar staff up there need to realise who pays their wages. They were not very friendly which is a shame because the roof top at sunset is not to be missed. The pool and hot tub looked good and there were plenty of loungers available. There is also a pool side bar.
