“Art Deco perfection”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2011

Wonderful location, just a couple of blocks walk to the shopping strip and right across from the beach and an easay walk down to the Santa Monica Pier. Hotel room was huge! We had a king suite with a separate living area and the largest bathroom. Very very spacious. Only drama was the water flowed out of the shower(over bath) onto floor every day as the shower curtain pooled the water. Otherwise the room was perfect. We went up to the roof top bar as we got a free drink card upon check in - but one drink and we left. We felt like we had just walked into a private party - so possibly a 'locals hangout'?? Great location to get to everywhere, especially Boa Restaurant, just up the road. Best white wine sangria! Tops

Very nice Hotel with an ocean view. The hotel is very modern & chic. Service is great. We had an ocean view terrace suite. The room felt more like New York apartment. Very cozy with a full kitchen. I thought that the layout was a bit weird, but we still enjoyed the room. It had 2 bedrooms. The balcony is a shared walkway with the rest of the guests on the floor, so if you are looking for privacy, this may not be your place. The view was magnificent. The rooftop bar is a nice touch. Great signature drinks that come with a price.($14). The only complaint I had was that you can hear the loud music and people partying till about 2 am. The suites are right below the rooftop bar and you can hear everything! If you want a peaceful, family spot, this isn't your joint. If you are there to party, it's a great place. Wonderful location, walking distance to 3rd st. Promenade and all of the restaurants. Modern & cool place. Would recommend for young couples.

Room Tip: If you want peace & quiet, do not get a terrace ocean view suite, because the rooftop bar &...

Fantastic seaview from this hotel, the decor was modern and chic, and atmosphere cool. Customer service was great, I didin't have a problem with it.
Location was great too, just a few minutes walk to 3rd promenade for shopping and food, and a few minutes to bike rental on the beachfront bike path.
The swimming pool looked great too - altough it was too cold to swim while I stayed there in December...

Room Tip: go for the sea view rooms, well worth it!

Shangri-La is a gorgeous hotel in a superb location, assuming you are looking for the more relaxed vibe of Santa Monica. From the hotel you can easily wander down to the Santa Monica pier, Venice Beach or try out the excellent Blue Plate Oysterette next door (try the lobster, mac & cheese for a real treat) and you are a very short drive to the Getty Villa. The hotel itself has excellent rooms and wonderful decor. Very stylish classic deco throughout the building. The rooftop bar is also superb and a wonderful place to watch a sunset, whether you are staying at the hotel or just want a night time hang (the other bars in the area weren't anywhere near as cool). The room was gorgeous, with excellent attention to detail and a humungous bath. We had a view of the beach and even though we were overlooking the main road there was little noise pollution as a) we were on the 5th floor; and b) the windows were triple glazed.

The only thing that annoyed was that there was no inclusive breakfast (although I guess it wasn't included in the deal, however I think that's a bit cheap not to include something like that in a hotel of that standard). Also there was a massive party (a high school reunion) that took place in the ground floor pool area. It was extremely invasive noise that went on until at least around 11pm. We complained about the noise to a concierge who sounded like he had been caught off guard himself and verbally battered quite heavily already by other guests. After some prodding of our dissatisfaction we were offered either a complimentary bottle of champagne or a fruit plate (they could not give us a further discount as the booking was made via Expedia and this tied their hands to offer any money off the room). We went for the former and got a very cheap bottle of faux champagne and some cookies that appeared to have been thrown in the microwave just prior to their arrival at our door. It wasn't exactly an ideal way to make up but more token effort - seemingly all that they were able to do given the Expedia restriction. Anyway, this was a bit of a one off really and probably not representative of the hotel overall. I would still consider staying at the hotel again as I do really like the deco look and feel to the place and the location is superb if you are looking for the beach vibe.

I took the family to La la land and well we picked a perfect spot. This is a boutique hotel which can be scary but everyone tried really hard to make it special and it is. Shout out to Dale Rohan, Steve, Azi, Hank and the gang. Its a hipster joint where I could bring the family. 6th floor rooms are cool. roof top bar feels like you are on a cruise but in a good way. pool area very cool.

The picture makes this place stand out like the Taj Mahal. The truth is that it blends perfectly with the surroundings. Given that you can walk to everything (beach, bikes , bars restaurants, movies, shopping, coffee houses, santa monica pier,) this is the place to stay.

The cons: well its an older place. The rooms are not the best in terms of sound insulation. The bar on Saturday got a little crazy and we heard it. Traffic on Ocean is audible. beds in one room little saggy... no internet or wi fi? lighting confusing,

TIp farmers market right outside the place is great, ride bikes to venice beach,

Room Tip: sixth floor out side decks

Stayed in the RnR suite for one night, was blown away by the view but the room somehow left me wanting more. Pros: The View. The view of the ocean and santa monica pier was remarkable and really took my breath away. Rooftop bar was nice, had nice views, and seemed to draw a hipish local crowd. Perfect location on ocean ave right by third street promenade and santa monica pier for easy beach access and pretty easy freeway access.

Cons: The room was awkwardly shaped and relatively small, and, given that other suites in the hotel have kitchens, it's disappointing this one doesn't have one. The room was a bit older, worn in some places, but stylish. Not the cleanest hotel I've ever been in, but pretty clean. Staff was friendly, but overly so and seemed overaggressive in pursuing tips. Small valet lot means it takes a while to get in/out.

Room Tip: RnR Suite has an incredible view but otherwise is oddly small and only really a bed in the one main...
