My fiancé could not have picked a better hotel than Shutters on the Beach to celebrate our engagement.
The location of this adorable Cape Cod style hotel, directly on Santa Monica's beach, is of course the main draw. (For those from outside the area, the bike/walking path is directly in front of the hotel and the pier is a stone's throw away).
Likely due to summer travelers, check-in was very slow. (Staff, although not rude, could definitely be more welcoming). I used the time to enjoy the lobby, which is reminiscent of a beach cottage living room. There are two wood burning fireplaces with cozy couches and lithographs on the wall.
Our room was on the 2nd floor, directly over the sand (which I've heard is the same cost as the tower rooms, set back from the beach). Walking in, I first noticed the floor to ceiling glass windows that offered a gorgeous, unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean.
We enjoyed the fresh air on our balcony, however being directly on the beach, we were above the walking/bike path and could hear every conversation as people strolled by. One of the staff members was smoking outside as well, which drifted into our room :( We wanted to leave the sliding glass door open during the day, but had to close it for these reasons.
The bed was luxurious, perhaps the best of any hotel I've stayed in. Amenities were as expected in a hotel of this caliber: a large wooden work desk, flat screen television, DVD player (but no "library" of movies), docking station for your ipod, robes and spa products in the bathroom. I particularly loved the built in bookshelves in the bedroom. We did not have a bathtub, which I would have liked, but there was a small television next to the marble -top sink.
Dining at the hotel was a treat. For lunch we tried the more casual restaurant, Pedals, a beach-side bar/cafe. Try the homemade lemonade - perfect for a hot summer day. Room service for breakfast/dinner was quick and delicious!
We loved the pool with an open-air deck facing the ocean, and if we had more time, we would have gone downstairs, rented bicycles and explored the beach area.
Overall Shutters on the Beach was a wonderful experience. We have even booked our rehearsal dinner here!
