“2nd Visit Beautiful Needs Updating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

While the property is stunning and peaceful; the rooms need to be updated. There for a company meeting, I was looking forward to revisiting despite the need for change. The first night, my friends and I had a fantastic dinner overlooking a fantastic vista. Unfortunately, that was the only good meal. The catered meals and breakfast and lunch buffets were very disappointing. It seemed like very little attention was put into the food quality at such a beautiful resort. I don't know if there are plans to do so, but hope the resort is updated and that the kitchen is reinvented.

We were in my hometown, Santa Cruz, for a family wedding, and wanted our own place to stay because our autistic teenage son needs quiet time. We had stayed at Chaminade long ago and tried it again. It was a busy time for the resort, but they found a Jr Suite for us for 2 weeks PLUS an extra night we added at the last minute. In every way they accomodated us. We prefer to do our own housekeeping; we received superb help getting towels, blankets, and pillows as needed. We had a rollaway bed brought in...we had it taken out. We had guests come for a pool party. We needed new keys...in short we were a high maintenance family and Chaminade handled our needs with courtesy and care. We enjoyed in room dining several times; the food is the best we've had while travelling. Everything is beautiful--the views, yes, and also the architecture and landscaping. Gardeners will enjoy the grounds. We also had occasion to notice that the different departments help each other. Twice we noticed staff from one department very busy and people from another department on another errand stopped, helped get the job done, then went on. Good energy there and a tribute to management. We did not visit the spa this time around but the pool & hot tub were awesome.

Room Tip: A family of 3 can be very happy in a Jr. Suite; we had several sleeping options and enough privacy f...

We were excited about staying at Chaminade based on recommendations & reviews; 10 minutes after arriving in our room my husband and I both agreed we were not impressed: the room was dingy, the hallway carpeting was stained, there were holes in the walls, and there were two trays from breakfast that sat outside a guest room well into evening. Our room was never vacuumed during the 4 days of our stay; the sheets weren’t changed and there was a thick layer of dust on top of the highboy/bureau. At check in the person who checked us in did not confirm the # of nights we were staying nor did they confirm the rates or provide us with any information about the resort. A bus load (literally, a bus was parked on site) of people arrived and we were told the resort was full. At Sunday brunch we had to tell the hostess we were not asked about our room # for the bill – we could have easily walked out without paying the $60 brunch tab. We stayed in the “1000” building and while our children enjoyed the close proximity to the pool, my husband and I have decided this resort was did not live up to its reputation.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the parking lot are loud with cars coming and going as well as the sound of luggage bei...

I recently stayed at Chaminade for a family wedding, and while the scenery was absolutely gorgeous, the price was very expensive for what you got. Granted I know it was the busy season for the town, but had I known better I would have stayed at a larger chain hotel. The room was very small and cramped for 2 people, a tiny bathroom, no mini fridge or anything, and being that I believe it is a converted catholic convent and not originally made to be a hotel, the walls were paper thin so you could hear the room over's general conversation, and needed earplugs to sleep. The views however are fabulous and a nice escape from city life where I normally live, so it was a nice quiet weekend even though we paid far too much.

My wife and I have a stayed at Chaminade a few times and have enjoyed it. The location is unique and normally the rooms are spacious and clean. On this most recent visit the floor and tub in the bathroom resembled the floor of a barber shop after a busy day—so much hair it seemed as if the bathroom hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Also on this most recent visit, we found out that the resort allows dogs. Fine if everyone is a responsible dog owner, but not okay if your room is next door to someone who leaves two barking dogs in their room for several hours.

Chaminade seems to have passed its prime. It's far too expensive for the condition it's in and the low level of customer service. We won't be staying again.

Room Tip: Note: We didn't eat breakfast at Chaminade, but there's no option for "not applicable...

My average rating is based on the lack of peace and quietness. I know that there are other rooms that are much quieter, Especially the rooms overlooking the woods, as we have stayed here before and will still stay here again. Check-in requires much patience, especially if there is a line. Front desk needs more organization. Rooms are great. Much space. Clean and neat. Walls are thin and we kept hearing the loud sound that resembled fast running water from within our closet wall. But it's a stellar hotel with great extras. Two great on-site restaurants. Incredible Sunday brunch ... to die for. Pool, Spa massage Gym and hiking. Much much more.

Room Tip: Choose top floor rooms overlooking woods for peace and quiet.

We recently attended a wedding here for 3 day - and found the grounds very pretty and beautiful. However, 2 days into our stay, most everyone's room key would not open the door. That is very annoying when you are standing outside your room in a dripping bathing suit! And for my 92-year old mother, it was totally unacceptable. She stood with her cane outside her room for over 1/2 hr until they finally showed up in their golf cart to let her in! The Wedding Food was below par - my prime rib was like an overcooked pot roast - I could hardly cut it with a knife. I'm sure the bride's parents paid a lot for the meal, but my oh my, the kitchen needs help. Nice salad and good bread, but the main course, not very good at all. The Chef needs to try out his meal and make some improvements and the front desk needs to fix the key problems.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room
