This hotel is one block from the Boardwalk. The location is fabulous. You can walk to the Boardwalk, the beach, the wharf, shops and restaurants in 5 minutes. Actually, if you walk in the opposite direction, along the river, you can walk into downtown Santa Cruz in about 15 minutes. Great because you can leave your car at the hotel and not worry about finding parking downtown. I loved staying on this street as it was easy to find, close to everything and you could walk to so many great places. It became "our neighborhood" while we stayed there. Loved walking to the beach and not having to get in our car , drive somewhere and then spend 20 extra minutes searching for parking. This is not a 5 star hotel. However, it is absolutely adequate for a vacation. We stayed 4 nights and would stay here again. The room was clean. The amenities were fine. The a/c, the mini fridge and the microwave all worked. Extra blankets and pillows were provided upon request. Coffee and tea are available until 11:00 p.m. nightly. The management was very nice. They tried hard to accommodate special requests. There is a small pool and plenty of free parking. The neighborhood was only a little questionable, however, I never felt unsafe walking through the area, day or night. The only negative issue with this hotel is the breakfast. The selection is somewhat meager, but workable. Two types of cereal, english muffins, butter, jam, packaged pastries, coffee and tea is offered daily. However, the management put a pitcher of milk out at 6:45 a.m. Breakfast technically opens at 7:00 a.m. (although one day the door wasn't unlocked until nearly 7:30 a.m. Not sure why.) The breakfast items stay out until approximately 9:00 a.m. (I believe). The milk is never refrigerated after it is placed next to the cereals! If I went right at 7:00 a.m., I would get a bowl of cereal and use the milk. But if I went later than 8:00 a.m., I wouldn't use the milk. How fast does milk spoil out of the fridge? I didn't want to try it. Suggestion to the management: Since I seemed to be the only person taking breakfast, I would guess that it doesn't get too crowded. Why not put the milk in a small fridge somewhere and then put up a sign, "Milk available on request". I know you might be busy at that moment and the person must wait for the milk, but better to wait and get fresh, cold milk than to use milk that's been out of the fridge for over 2 hours! As for the hotel, I appreciated the location, cleanliness, helpful management and free parking. I would definitely stay here again, but I might plan on getting my own breakfast or, at least, ask for fresh milk! If you are looking for a 5 star hotel, go somewhere else. If you are wanting a decent hotel with free parking that is incredibly close to the Boardwalk, beach and the wharf, stay here.
