“Choose another hotel in Santa Cruz”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2007

We stayed at the West Cliff Inn at Santa Cruz. Four Sisters has a history of fine property. This is not one of them. We were put in the room at the top of the hotel. No AC and about 100 degrees. We had to leave our door open in order to keep in under 90. Do not stay at the West Cliff until winter. I contacted Four Sisters management by E-mail and US Mail and never got a answer.

We stayed for a night here. The inn is very newly opened and we could tell that they had some things to work out logistically. Staff was in training. Physically the place is lovely--restored old building now has decor like the store Restoration hardware if you're familiar-- but it is limited by the fact that you face a fairly busy street intersection and stare directly at the Coast Hotel, which significantly blocks your view of the ocean.

Our room was small, which is probably typical, with just enough room for a king sized bed and a couple of chairs. My significant other and I kept bumping into each other. Warning: when they tell you you have a window view of the ocean, unless you get the one suite with the large bay window, you will get a smaller than average window that has some view--but remember you will mostly see and hear the street and cars accelerating up the hill anyway. The jetted tub was fantastic. The location is great if you want to go to the beach or the boardwalk--it's an easy walk. The breakfast was good, above average, but just like the other four sisters inns--so they have a standard going and no great surprises.

Soft drinks and coffee and tea are available all day, which is very nice. The lounge area is inviting. Afternoon snacks were simple but a sweet touch. They were late in putting out the breakfast--several other guests were also waiting because they told us it would start at a certain time but it didn't for another 15 mins because they were running behind.

We booked the room at a fairly discounted rate, which I confirmed by phone 2 or 3 times ahead of time because I never received a confirmation email as promised (I requested it twice). I would have felt it was definitely overpriced if we had to pay the normal going rate. On check-out the staff finally forgot about the discounted rate and asked me to sign for the room charge at the regular rate . ugh. It was another indication that they were disorganized. Luckily after a bit of discussion they did not insist and I got the discounted rate. It was embarrassing, though, feeling like I was asking for something at a discount, and it was supposed to be a suprise treat for my significant other, so all the talk about the bill in front of him was suboptimal and frankly, a little embarrasing. The staff was not discrete about it. Money numbers were loudly discussed (do they really want to do that with the other guests around?) Not the best way to end the experience.

In summary, it is expensive, nice, street noisy, but in a good location. Management is still a little disorganized but many of the staff were nice and they're trying. Not as romantic as it seems on the website because of the noise. They should run some more specials to get people to try the place out because at their regular rates, people might be a little disappointed at the value.

  • Liked — the decor is fresh and new
  • Disliked — disorganized management

Despite the good reputation of the Four Sisters chain (we have liked many of them) this new one is horrible. For the money we paid we expect to get a room that fits the description, is ready for our arrival and fit to stay in.
Our expensive room was billed as having a "private deck with hot tub with a view of the Santa Cruz mountains." It is a small above ground hot tub with an overturned staircase and stains. It is anything but private with a screenless window of another room looking right out on the deck. There is no table or chairs but two lounges and an empty pot filled with bags of potting soil and a view of the rooftops, parking lot and the coke machine of the hotel next door!
Overall, the decor is nice and the room is clean but it does not make up for the many problems. The room is tiny, no desk, huge closet but no refrigerator, EXTREMELY noisy from the room above, hallway and stairway and you can hear the toilet flush, the shower and voices and the TV in the other rooms. It made for a very sleepless and restless night. The bathroom is very small and the sink drain was stopped up and non-working. I had to reach under the sink to manually drain the standing water out. When we turned the shower on, the shower head is positioned so that it sprays right out the shower door and all over the bathroom floor!!!

Many calls to the front desk went unanswered during the day and evening so we couldn't ask for the morning coffee delivery. No water in the room,no pen or paper or other nice amenities that comprable B and B's usually have. The common room on the first floor had a water cooler in the corner but no water bottle! But, it was clean!

We travel a great deal and stay in nice hotels and B and B's all over and we will NEVER stay here again. If in town, stay at the Inn at Depot Hill or Babbling Brook Inn for great and hospitable service and accomodations for less money. Trust us, do not stay here.

  • Liked — Bath towels
  • Disliked — Noisy and way overpriced and innkeeper had no recommendations for dinner

It is of great concern to me when any guest has a disappointing experience.

We take to heart any situation in which our company does not meet the standard of excellence that we have set for ourselves. We will be investigating the concerns the guests brought to our attention, and will work diligently to rectify those that I can.

The hotel opened on June 15, 2007 and we are currently working through any issues that arise.

Best regards,

Lin McMahon
Director of Operations

What a fabulous hotel, we had a lovely room from which we could see the sea (but also the road, so if you mind a little noise, you might prefer a rear facing room). The property has been beautifully restored and the breakfast and afternoon snacks were great.
