“I loved the place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

We stayed here in June 2012.
The place looks amazing, the prettiest building in Santa Cruz in my opinion. We were on a tour of the USA and stopped in hotels around this price range, this was easily the best, and my favourite of any I've stayed in over there.

The reception staff were extremely helpful, giving ideas of restaurants and places to visit. The bed was extremely comfy, and the place was very clean. In the afternoon there was a wine reception. I remember there were a few different nibbles and a choice of red or white wine. Both wines were quite quaffable. To sit on the balcony in the sun with a nice red was bliss. There is a public balcony at the front open to all visitors during the day. We seemed to be the only people who used it during our stay, which was great! Our room was round the side. Obviously not as good a view, but the sun stayed on our balcony until the early evening.

All in all, if I was going to Santa Cruz again, Id definitely stay here.

One complaint. Not a great deal of parking. When we stopped there was going to be a car show (Woodys). The hotel put out reserved parking cones. One of the spaces wasn't used. I had my car scratched in the car park. It was a rental so didn't particularly care, but it was a pristine Camaro when we hired it, and a scratched one when we took it back.

SCAM ARTISITS!! I will never stay here again. Matt from West Cliff Inn just called to tell me they were charging an additional $100 to my credit card without authorization for a stay that occured on 10/13, which was ~2 months ago. They said the bedandbreakfast dot com GC I used was invalid which it IS NOT. The card is in there possesion and they are going to just charge me $100 without authorization????? BTW I never woud have stayed here unless I had the GC b/c they are WAY overpriced.

Not to mention they offered no alternative for the food tour we could not go on as offered because it was booked. We also had to park our second car across the street and pay the meter every few hours because they have so few spots for guests. The breakfast offered was not appetizing at all.

BEWARE of this shady establishment!!!!

Tamara M, Vice President at West Cliff Inn, a Four Sisters Inn, responded to this review, December 17, 2012
This reviewer’s comments are very concerning, particularly as we are an incredibly reputable business operating with the utmost integrity since 1975. For all guests concerned about this comment, please rest assured that in no way did we "scam" this guest nor are we a “shady" establishment. These comments are truly unfounded.

We are more than happy to accept BedandBreakfast.com gift cards however the gift card she presented was an invalid card. Upon contacting BedandBreakfast.com to redeem the funds, their accounting department told us “This card has been voided in the system and is not valid for use. Please use an alternate form of payment from the guest.”

Their accounting department went on to explain that either the gift card was never purchased or it was returned or voided at Costco for some other reason. They also said that if the guest still has the receipt for the card she suggests they go to Costco for resolution as it was sold there, but that they cannot redeem the card.

Since her gift card was not valid, there was a $100 balance on her account. Her credit card was not charged without authorization. Upon check-in, she signed and authorized her credit card to be charged for the room rate and any additional incidentals that may occur, as all guests do. When the gift card came back as invalid it left the $100 balance on her account and her authorized credit card was used to settle her bill. Additionally, before charging her card we tried to contact her on numerous occasions as we were hoping to help her resolve the issue with BedandBreakfast.com and Costco.

We are very sorry that she had a less than amazing experience at West Cliff Inn as we strive to insure that every guest who stays with us has an enjoyable and memorable time. The Santa Cruz Food Tour is an activity that has gained a great deal of momentum over the past year. Our website asks that guests contact the tour directly to discuss availability for the desired times, as it is not guaranteed.

We spent five nights, and had a lovely stay. The rooms are quiet and comfortable, the chef does a great job on breakfast, and it's located a block from the entrance to the wharf. It has a nice dining room and sitting room, as well. Since it was off season, there weren't many people staying there; so I don't have a sense of what it would be like when full. It's over 100 years old, and a really beautiful building.

Room Tip: The fireplace thermostat kept coming on automatically (even though we set it very low) and making th...

The West Cliff Inn has got to be situated in one of the best possible spots in Santa Cruz - close enough to most everything but far enough away from the crowds on the Boardwalk to feel peaceful. Today - Thanksgiving Day - the town is totally quiet. The Inn is lovely and what a wonderful house it must have been at the turn of the century. From the moment we walked in last night around 5:00pm, Rachel (I think that's her name) was awesome - very welcoming without being sticky about it, informative and helpful. She laid out simple hors d'oeuvres of cheeses, veggies and a few sweet things in one of the first floor parlors along with red and white wine. When we asked, she gave us some helpful ideas and directions to a few near by (walking distance) places for a sunset dinner.

Our room (#7) is very nice, very well kept and the lovely marble-clad bathroom's tub/shower is HUGE!!! Everything feels well considered and thought out. There's a lovely, deep veranda off the second floor guest rooms that's fantastic to laze around on and enjoy the spectacular view of the Bay. I think if I came back, I would ask for either room #3 or #4 just because they are on the very front of the building with unobstructed views of the Bay, but room #7 is just fine with it's partial view.

I think the one and only complaint (and it's a small one) would be that I wish the bed linens were a little finer. Their texture is a bit scratchy rather than soft and crisp as I would expect them to be. It's the one thing that feels somewhat incongruent with the refined atmosphere of the rest of this lovely B&B. But that's literally all I take any exception to.

This morning's breakfast in the downstairs parlor was fantastic - a delicious, moist quiche, potatoes, sweet baked goods, bagels, English muffins with choices of cream cheese, jams or peanut butter, muesli, coffee, tea, the works. Awesome.

All in all, HIGHLY recommended. Well done, West Cliff Inn.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front of the property have unobstructed views of the Bay. One the second floor, it wou...

While cruising the web, I discovered that this lovely restored home nestled on a cliff overlooking the Pacific offers a "Bon Appetit" special. We signed up and got a lovely double room with ocean view and a nicely discounted meal at the Shadowlands Restaurant (equally amazing). The staff were welcoming, the late afternon wine and cheese perfect for winding down after our drive, and the breakfast in the lovely sittingroom/dining area well done. We can't wait to go back.

We enjoyed a delightful stay at this B & B. It surpassed our expectations in every way. Absolutely immaculate property, both inside & out. This is the perfect example of well-run lodgings. Hats off to the wonderful staff, who delivered superb service with a smile.

Matt, Sarah & Lauren were particularly helpful, and we thank them for explaining directions so patiently, printing off maps, plus ensuring that we were always comfy and happy.

Special thanks to the gentleman who prepared breakfast this morning. He returned several times during breakfast, to ask guests if they needed anything else. Of course he did such a lovely job that we needed nothing at all!

We feasted on a generous spread of French toast, broccoli quiche, boiled eggs, chocolate chip scones, muesli, variety of sliced melons & other fruits, etc. This was in addition to bagels, cold cereals, bread, juice, coffee, tea. Spreads like jams, peanut butter & cream cheese were also available.

We looked forward to the 4.30pm-6pm hors d'oeuvres & wine, on both days we spent here (Nov 7 & 8, 2012) in Room 6. There was a cheese/crackers platter, plus veggies & dip, & also a dessert.

The Inn also offers fresh-baked cookies every day. What more could guests possibly ask for? Clean, safe surroundings, a feeling of being pampered with the much-appreciated extras described above, warm smiles from employees. We had it all, & would not hesitate to return. We highly recommend this B & B, & the location is gorgeous, with ocean views from all front rooms & balconies/decks, & easy walks to most local destinations. In fact, you simply cross the street to the beach .

I cannot suggest a single thing I would do differently at this Inn. It is perfect. Again, our sincere thanks for your hospitality. It would be our pleasure to return.

Room Tip: We were happy with our partial ocean view from Room 6. Ask for a front room if you'd prefer a fu...

We stayed here three weeks in a row after my mothers death. We needed to come each week for three weeks for, four days to clean out my mothers house, and the drive to Santa Cruz and the ocean views made the trip very enjoyable considering what we were going through at the time. The staff is great, the rooms are very nice, the bathrooms are great. My only complaint was room seven which is noisy in the morning. My favorite room is room 5 which has a private patio and hot tub. Great breakfasts in the morning. They do have afternoon wine and snacks, but not until 4:30 and we usually eat at 5 so we did not imbibe. This is the only place to stay in Santa Cruz.

Room Tip: Room seven is noisy in the morning when they are cooking. Most of the other rooms are very quiet.
