“On the boardwalk and clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

You can see the boardwalk. The breakfast worked. The rooms were clean albeit basic and outdated. This is not the best part of town but it was a safe parking lot and had metal security gates to get to the elevators. Motel not Hotel to be sure. The amusement park closed at 11:00 so it was quiet enough for sleep by then.

This place was clean. The staff was nice. Breakfast OK.

There is no AC, pool, or hot-tub though.

This is my 3rd stay at this hotel. It is a motel and not a hotel. Everything is very basic. Staff not very friendly or helpful, they seemed more into chit chatting with each other. The ONLY reason I stay at this hotel is for the location. I LOVE the location!! I feel safe staying there. The room was cleaned nicely upon check-in. I was very disappointed to come back the next day after being gone from 9:30 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. and still have a dirty room. I gave up on them cleaning my room and just got some extra towels to get me thru the next night. There is in NO air conditioning, so be prepared for a fan if your hot. Althought it doesn't normally get to warm.

Recently stayed at the Carousel Motel because of it's proximity to the beach boardwalk. It's a great find not only for it's location, but comfortable rooms, friendly and informative staff, continental breakfast and value. I'd definitely recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Santa Cruz, especially if your destination is the visiting the boardwalk.

If this place is ranked 19th out of 52, I'm scared to know what the other places are like. They advertise a "guaranteed" check in by 3:00pm... Well at 3:15 our room wasn't ready and the maid just started vacuuming the room as we stood by waiting. The front desk staff was unapologetic and unconcerned. Then we go only to find a run down, outdated, and potentially hazardous room. The bathroom door doesn't close properly. In fact, it hangs crooked on the hinge, leaving a one inch gap at the top. The window doesn't stay open. If you open it, it will slam down quickly - so watch your fingers. There is no window screen in the bathroom window. There is cable running across the ground along the wall to the balcony - so make sure you or your kids don't trip going in or out. Also, the trim around the sliding door was coming off and the nails were poking out. Our mini fridge bottom screw (leg) wasn't even attached and was super wobbly. We found the bottom screw in the back of the fridge. Good thing my toddler didn't touch it beforehand and possibly have a serious accident. To top everything off, the room was stuffy and had an unpleasant musty smell.

The ONLY thing this place has going for it, is its proximity to the boardwalk... But is that worth it, for me, to stay here again? No thank you... I would take my money elsewhere.

It is literally steps from the boardwalk and beach and for that, it's perfect. The building is old and could use some updating on the room decor, carpets, patio furniture, paint, etc. Overall, it is clean and great for the price; but the cleaning staff was a little lazy with details during my stay: they left the shower mat on the balcony, with the door unlocked and placed a mascara stained towel on the rack. But overall, it was actually very clean. Having breakfast available was nice.

My son and I have stayed at this hotel approximately 10 times, and we have loved it every time. Right across the street from the Boardwalk, you can't get any closer. And with the beach, the bike paths, and restaurants out on the pier, it makes for a great time!!!
And the staff is truly GREAT!
