“just off beach with ocean view, clean, nice staff, small”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

This is a quaint little hotel. The King size ocean view room is small, but has a nice view. The decor is old fashioned but in good condition and clean. The bed was comfortable, we slept well. The bathroom and shower in room 239 was very small, but I got a good shower. The room has a sliding glass door that is your entrance and one small window on the ocean side, and one small window in the bathroom. Air conditioner worked well. The room had a microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker. We used the tea and coffee service in the office instead. The breakfast was typical hotel waffle machine, boiled egg, boxed cereal, bagels, muffins, apples, oranges, bananas, tea, coffee milk. We enjoyed sitting outside our room on the patio chairs with ottoman and watching the sun go down. The best part of this accommodation is the view and the close walking distance to the beach. The nice lady at the desk let us park there before check in so we did not have to pay for parking down by the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for room with a view if this is important to you. I did not see an elevator so ask about it if...

I stayed at Seaway Inn last year with my teen daughter's girl scout troop in their "family room", which is a two bedroom, one bath unit. Decided to stay here again last week with my family of four in the same room (they have only one room like this). The best thing about Seaway Inn is the proximity to the wharf and Boardwalk. It is clean, well maintained, and nicely landscaped with flower boxes blooming with bright flowers. This is an old motel/motor inn that has been renovated nicely. It is a small place, and rooms are also small....bit they have fixed it up nicely. Their complimentary breakfast is quite good and well received by my teen children who are picky. They do not get up early for anything on trips usually, but they did for this breakfast....they loved making their own Belgium waffles. Pros to staying here - clean, awesome location (there is a slight hill as you walk back from the wharf and boardwalk), safe area (motels across from boardwalk and down that street are noisy and scummy), quiet at night (even with window open), awesome shower (dual water heads in our unit), and again, above average breakfast. The two room unit had one bedroom with two queen beds, table/chairs and tv. It is small, but beds were comfortable. Other room has a futon (which my picky teen daughter said was very comfy), large desk, tv unit with microwave and fridge. Cons - lighting in 2 queen room at night was bad (they need brighter bulbs or another lamp), small sink/vanity area that is within shower/toilet area...very little vanity room due to large/modern type sink/bowl. Need a better fan in the bathroom as it got very steamy.
I would stay here again. Please note if you are new to Santa Cruz that it is a very beachy-vibe type area with all sorts of odd folks. As you approach the boardwalk/beach area you will walk past some characters smoking things they shouldn't be....but they were harmless. But if you aren't used to seeing this, it can be a bit startling. But that is what Santa Cruz is like.

Room Tip: If you want a view, ask for an upper level room. Stairs only however. And you have to sit outside y...

Thank you for your review of our property and your continued patronage of our Inn. We do actually have that same room on the 2nd floor as well, so we have two of those particular rooms. We also have one more additional two room suite that has a king bed in one room and a queen and futon in a separate room. Thank you also, for your suggestions; we will make sure to take those into consideration. We look forward to seeing you again!

We started our time in Santa Cruz at a different hotel. The room was nice but the location of the room and the pet fee were not going to work for us (across from the pool entry and $30/night/dog). So we found the Seaway and couldn't be happier we switched.

Rooms are nice and clean. Big shower with a shower head that is not built for a midget! I'm 6' tall and all the other hotels we've stayed in this trip have been built for a max height of 5'5" I swear.

Nice little porch area outside room with chairs and side table made it nice to hang outside the room and look at the bay.

I would recommend this to anyone with dogs that wants a great location near to the boardwalk. Nice, quiet, clean, and relatively inexpensive place.

The Seaway Inn was our second stop on our 10 day California road trip.
We stayed for 2 nights - honestly, 1 night would have sufficed.
The Inn was very cute, but small and old. Don't get me wrong, it was clean, but the room was very small and tight for just 3 people. The bathroom was especially small. The sink/vanity was updated, but there wasn't nearly enough of room to put your toiletries out, not enough room to hang the bath towels, and for parents of small children - there is no tub - just a very tiny stand up shower stall. Oh, by the way, we had a "Mini Ocean View Suite"! (To get the ocean view one had to exit our room and stand out on the common area). Continental breakfast was included each morning and wi-fi was free. All in all it worked for us - we were just spending 2 nights on our trip down the Coast.
As far as the Pier - we were surprised at how large it was - quite a few restaurants and gift shops to choose from. Lots and lots of Sea Lions under the pier! Very cool to see them and hear them "bark". We went kayaking and that was an awesome experience!
The "boardwalk" wasn't actually a boardwalk, but was set up more like a very small amusement park. Didn't impress us at all and we could have done without it.
One thing that did disturb us was the day we went to the beach - there was a dead sea lion that had washed up on the sand. Apparently someone had seen it there the afternoon before - and it remained there after we left later on in the day. Lord knows how long it actually remained there until someone removed it. Parks Department should get on that right away as there are families with very small children who use the beach daily.
We also went exploring to West Cliff Drive which had some amazing views!
As in San Francisco, we were very surprised to see such a large amount of homelessness.
All in all, for a little over $200 per night it served its purpose.

Thank you for your review of our property. You mentioned that you had to step out onto the patio to get an ocean view from your room, but you can also catch that spectacular view from your main window, it faces directly towards the ocean. We are still working on upgrading our remaining bathrooms, I was sorry to hear that was considered to be one of the downfalls of your stay with us, as far as the single person shower stall; unfortunately, all of our rooms are shower only, we do not have any bathtubs. Yes, our rooms are on the smaller side, we are a small, older inn, and are constantly working on upgrading what we can; reviews like yours are taken very seriously. I will make sure to have some more hooks installed in our bathrooms as well, for more hanging space. We do hope to see you another time.

This is a basic motel so don't come here if you're seeking extravagance. The accomodations are modest and rooms are fairly small. But the balcony in front of the second floor rooms has a nice view of the marina and the ocean and pleasant place to sit with a glass of wine and your dog. We especially enjoyed taking an after dinner walk along the West Cliff Drive overlooking the ocean. Staff was friendly and the breakfast was adequate. Overall this is a good value and nice to have places like this that accept dogs for a modest $15 fee. We will return.

Room Tip: The second floor rooms have a better view of the harbor and ocean.

I normally stay here every time I come to visit my brother. The location makes it so easy to walk and do stuff. I love that you can walk over to the cliffs and enjoy the beautiful pacific. Always clean. Love the patios. Looking forward to my next visit.

This isn't a fancy, high end hotel like the "Dream Inn" across the street. But it is within walking distance to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. It's a great value with the continental breakfast, including fresh waffles, orange juice, yogurt, fruit, coffee, teas, etc.

The rooms are small, but clean. We spent very little time in ours-mostly to sleep. Showers are modern, room decor is fine, not fancy. Rooms have tv, dvd player, small cube fridge, ice from front desk when you need it. Staff is pleasant. Stephanie is the Innkeeper, and she will always go the extra distance to accommodate your requests.
