Wonderful experience from the moment we walked into the sleek lobby with part of a massive redwood as the front desk. On the other wall, shelves of real books, all wrapped in white covers. Why? You can't tell a book by the cover. . . .Walking past a half-wall to the modern dining room -- with fireplace at one end and patio/pool through the glass doors across the way -- white painted plaster squirrels frolic high on the wall.
Terrific staff, from the front desk to the wait staff to the housekeeping pros -- all so friendly and very helpful, including spending 20 minutes getting an ipad to recognize the free hotel WiFi.
Two padded chairs and a tree trunk table sat on the little covered patio outside the door, facing the treeline of a park. Inside, the room was modern and well-lighted, including a nearly full glass wall in front with attractive light filtering curtains. Conservation-minded decor and amenities, including shower soap in a ring. Sliding closet door in the bath area a nice touch -- provided space for accessories on low shelves, as well as easy access to clothing after showering.
Though somewhat limited, the restaurant menu brought forth excellent meals throughout the day. It was by choice, not mere proximity, that five breakfasts, a lunch and dinner all occurred in the restaurant or patio by the pool during the stay. Fine pool, comfortable lounge chairs, a few cabanas and a whirlpool. Peaceful and pleasant.
The hotel reportedly once housed UC-Santa Cruz students, but a complete remodel has turned it into a classy milieu within walking distance of the boardwalk and ocean as well as the almost too cute Santa Cruz downtown.
