“Great place to stay in Santa Cruz”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013 via mobile

Hotel is in walking distance to downtown Santa Cruz. Newer property with a great swimming pool and large hot tub. Poolside service is awesome! Very friendly staff! Great place to stay. I will stay there again

I went on a weekend trip to Santa Cruz with my family to hang out in Santa Cruz.
Our initial experience at the Paradox was great and we were enjoying our first nights stay.
The thing was when both my kids woke up the next morning the flu had showed up.
My wife and I knew we weren't going to make it another night at this hotel with these sick kids.
I went to the front desk in hopes of them understanding, I spoke with Stephanie at the front desk. Stephanie looked at what she could do to understand our situation. & She went above and beyond so we didn't have to pay the extra nights stay. This was a great relief since that was some of our budget for our summer activities.
That experience alone makes me want to come back to the Paradox for all future overnighters to Santa Cruz. Thanks Stephanie & Team Paradox Hotel

Room Tip: If you have kids that tend to have an earlier bedtime you might not want a room that faces the pool...

We finally found a chill location to stay in a beach town with questionable lodgings. Pool area had hipster glamour & service was excellent. Awesome French fries & micro brew by pool .. Yes! Rule of no kids in hot tub in hot tub actually enforced by a nice girl in a red bathing suit, thank god.
We had a room in the back, which is quiet. Love the whole natural wood decor going on. Only bummer was kids running amok.. Not hotels fault but parents. Sure, the reception area is built on a log, but that doesn't mean you get to climb on it,kid. I can only suggest the hotel put some signs around. Hoping a bunch of hipsters discover the hotel & they can take it to another level. How about music by the pool & some hard liquor?? Overall great experience & we shall return with our posse.

The hotel is nice: a good room and a nice swimmingpool with a lot of sunbeds. It is near THE mainstreet with a lot of shops and restaurants. Santa Cruz is a really nice, relaxed place heat THE coast and absolutely visiting worth.

This is an older hotel that has been nicely remodeled. The pool is excellent. Rooms are nicely remodeled but are very small. A fairly nice value.

We booked this location due to the trip advisors reviews. They were very accurate. We wanted to walk at night to the downtown for dinner and drinks. The front desk girl advised us not to do this due to crime in the park. She was right street people everywhere. We really appreciate her warning us as we made our plans to return before dark.
Not a resort town that we will ever return to unless they do something like NYC did in the 90's with their famous clean up.

Dear Graham L,

Thank you for your recent stay with the Hotel Paradox. Glad to hear the location was convenient for you. There are many great shops and restaurants in the area that are really easy walking distance. We also feature a great restaurant onsite as well-Solaire. So, if you don't want to explore, we can accomodate any appetite! We do have some different sized rooms and styles. If you wanted to try and have a bit larger room, I recommend booking the "Expanded Room" or a Suite if you really need some room to stretch. The Mini Kings, our standard room is a more economical room and is a more cozy room type. We do hope you will return to us in the future and we will be sure to take great care of you. Please feel free to reach out to me before you book next time.

Many thanks!

Pros:

Our room was clean and nicely furnished, with high-end modern finishings. The staff was helpful and friendly. The pool area is nice and clean (if a little stark). While I didn't eat at the restaurant, the menu looked appetizing, and they had plenty of waiters on staff.

Cons:

My biggest complaint would be the size of the room. Because this is obviously a budget motel that has been given a facelift, the room was really just a 10x10 box with a long, narrow bathroom and a tiny closet. Seriously, I have stayed in more spacious Motel 6 rooms. For $300 per night, I expected a lot more. Granted, we stayed in a "mini king" room, and the upgraded rooms I am assuming would be larger. The walkways to the rooms also did little to mask the hotel's "economy" origins. It had a stark, cold, industrial feel, not the "modern" that they are going for.

I should note that we had a voucher to get the mini-king room for $130. Unfortunately we let it expire, and the summer rates are more expensive, so we paid an additional $180. If I had only paid the original $130 I would have been happy, because that is about what the room is worth.

Room Tip: Do not get the mini-king. Ask for a room on the opposite side from the pool.

Dear Vihila,

Thank you very much for your recent stay at the Hotel Paradox as well as the review you posted in regards to your experience. We appreciate all feedback on how we can be a better Hotel to all our guests. I am very happy to see that you felt the service was worthwhile, we have a great team of Santa Cruz locals that are energized and enjoy what they do. We also love the pool area and have gone to great lengths to ensure a great poolside feeling of relaxation. Solaire, our restaurant is always happy to receive our Hotel guests and our culinary team is a talented group of Chefs. Thank you for recognizing the amenities we offer guests and what everyone can look forward to. Sounds like you purchased into the Travelzoo program which was run during winter to spring to help the hotel gain higher occupancy and get exposure into the market which resulted in us running a great value during that time of year. We are still working to get the brand out there so guests can try us out. The Travelzoo was great for us and did exactly that and offered a great value for our rooms. We are now going into our high season when the Hotel is much busier and as such, the rates do lift as demand in the market rises. We are very sorry to hear that you didn't see the value in the stay. For less expensive rates, I would recommend a weekday or even Sunday when the rates come down quite a bit. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of further service to you and please know we will do all we can to improve the value perception of the hotel. Please feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to make it up to you.

Many thanks!

We just stayed at the Hotel Paradox this weekend and were very pleased. It is about a mile from the boardwalk on Ocean Street, walkable to other restaurants. The hotel was just completely rebuilt in Sept 2012, and is clean and very modern with a green, sustainable, Euro flair. Definitely much nicer than the other little motels on the way to the beach. The pool is wonderful - warm which is good because it doesn't get super hot in Santa Cruz. They also have a large hot tub if the air is too cool for the pool. You can order drinks and appetizers right by the pool too.

They are still working on a few minor things - they don't have a liquor license, so they have beer and wine, and can make cocktails from Agave wine, which was still good. Also don't quite have room service, but you can order and pick up a full tray yourself. Overall though, I was very pleased with our stay and would recommend it to my friends and family!

Dear Corey W,

We appreciate your recent stay and review of the Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz. Great to hear that you enjoyed the location of the hotel, it is very close to downtown making it easy to access everything in Santa Cruz. Glad to hear the temp on the pool was good and that you took the time to relax out on the Pool Deck. We do offer full food and beverage service on the deck with an all day dining pool menu. We also feature Happy hour out on the deck from 4p-7p Sun - Thurs as well. We are still (impatiently) waiting for the Liquor license to be approved. (tap, tap tap...) We have done all we can to address this, and please know, we are just as anxious as guests to obtain it. We are currently working hard to get In Room Dining up and running, we want to make sure we have the ability to do it right before attempting execution of it. The team is working to get this up and going within the next 2 weeks.

We thank you for staying with us and giving us the great feedback, we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Many thanks!
