“Price, Location, and Breakfast!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

Planned a last minute summer beach getaway with my fiance and our puppy.. Was very happy to get this 3-star hotel at a 2-star price, big plus that it is pet friendly as well! This place is about 4 blocks from the Boardwalk, excellent location. The property is pretty modern. We stayed in the annex. Originally they had us in the main building but based on other reviewers here, I requested the annex. The room is terribly simple and small but it was very clean and comfortable, and yes, they have a Keurig coffee machine in it. The TV is tiny and a tube, not flatscreen(!?!) One huge minus is that there was no chair or table in our room, just the bed, so eating take out or leftovers will have to be on the bed (or standing, which my fiance did). The bathroom is seriously lacking counter space but we managed. The free breakfast here is a 5-star Costco Plus! Costco bagels & muffins, cereal, milk, juice, coffee, and an amazing waffle maker! We absolutely loved it! The free Wi-Fi worked excellent for us.

Overall, wouldn't mind staying here again but will definitely be open to other options.. Not having a chair in the room was a big bummer.. It was our first time spending the night in Santa Cruz, I imagine other hotels this close to the Boardwalk will not be so clean and updated.

We (my 11 year old son and I) stayed for 3 nites in July 2014. The Continental Inn is about 3-4 blocks from the Boardwalk and a quick drive to anywhere in Santa Cruz or Capitola. It is located on Ocean Avenue which is very heavy with traffic - so trying to make the left turn into their parking lot was a little tricky. The gentleman that checked us in - Vic - was very helpful and very nice. He knew how to get us anywhere we needed to go. We reserved a queen size room - but Vic offered to upgrade us to a King at no extra charge - then he asked the question you don't ask an 11 year old - do you want to be on the hot tub side or the pool side? Well of course the pool side. Well that meant we had to go back across Ocean Avenue to their other building. We were on the 2nd floor - thank goodness for elevators! The room was large and very clean. The continental breakfast was great and the room where they served it was large enough to accommodate many people. The only down side that we experienced was the bed was a little worn out - very soft mattress and the first night we had nightmare next door neighbors - young kids stayed up till at least 3am in and out of their door on the on walkway talking and talking.. But they left the next day. Oh by the way we never swam in the pool - it was tiny and not deep. And who wants to swim in a pool when you have the Pacific Ocean just a few blocks away.

It is very difficult to get lodging in Santa Cruz in August, so we were lucky to book a 3 night stay at the Continental Inn. The room, located in an annex building across busy Ocean Ave from the main building, was actually very clean and attractive, with a comfortable king sized bed, large bathroom, modernly decorated with grey-brown walls and while plantation shutters. It came with free hi speed internet access. "Breakfast" was included in the quite expensive (but typical cost for a room during tourist season) of the room, but the offerings were mainly carbs and the room was too small to accommodate even a few people.

The the real problem with this motel (it really isn't an "inn") is the location and the clientele. It is at an intersection of two busy roads, one of which leads to the beach and boardwalk. While that may be convenient it is also a traffic nightmare, both daytime and nighttime. Loud cars and motorcycles, as well as police sirens raced by throughout much of the night. But the real problem with the noise was in the motel itself. People were talking loudly and stomping around in their rooms all night. On our last sleepless night's stay there were several people (at least 4-5 adults and 2 young children in 1 room!!!) hanging out on the outside walkway, playing loud music and yelling loudly. It became so bad that my mild mannered husband opened our door to scream at them. We also called the front desk which quieted the noise for a bit (at least the boom box music was turned off), but the yelling continued for another hour. At one point one of the babies was screaming hysterically and I contemplated calling 911, but things finally settled down.

I do not recommend this motel on any level, though I suspect that many of the motels in the area are not dissimilar, given the touristy nature of SC. Next time we will not come in August, and we will make reservations well in advance at a hotel or real inn in a quieter part of SC.

Continental Inn probably sets the bar for best of the budget-friendly inns/motels in Santa Cruz. The "excellent" rating I am giving Continental Inn is in comparison to other two-star hotels in Santa Cruz.

Pros: friendly service, fast Wi-Fi, and free breakfast with a waffle maker! In regard to the room, it is clean and modern (wood paneled floors was a plus). The in-room coffee is above-average. The A/C works well.

Cons: room windows are bolted shut, so it's difficult to air out your room unless you turn on the a/c, which can be a hassle during colder days. The bed, while new, was slightly uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Request a room in the annex building (which is a part of the Continental Inn) across the street. The...

We stayed at the Continental Inn for two nights in July of 2014. We chose it for the price; it was clean and worked out fine. The continental breakfast was a nice perk, but there is very little seating and only one waffle maker for many guests. The rooms have been renovated; they have laminate hardwood floors which is nice because there's no sandy carpeting. The beds are large and comfortable. The rooms are small but for the price, they're not bad. We were a little fooled by the hot tub and pool, though, and if you're considering this hotel, you should know that up front. The hot tub is located in a corner of the parking lot jammed in by a portable storage unit. There were dead flowers in a flower box that were probably supposed to make you forget you are relaxing in the parking lot. Didn't work. The pool is located in the annex which was across the street. It is much smaller than the hotel website's picture conveys; it was dirty and unusable. You have to drive to the boardwalk; it would be quite a long walk.

We stayed at the Continental Inn one evening while in the area for the "Wharf to Wharf" annual race in Santa Cruz. The staff was nice, the room was small, the free breakfast was nice.... All in all, not too bad. But the price was jacked up beyond reason for the big crowd in town that weekend - $300+ taxes was outrageous for this "inn" that would normally be I the range of $100!!!

My wife was a bit freaked out when she went to bed and found the sheets sandy. Ok, I get it we are near the beach, but this is supposed to be a freshly made bed !!! Yikes!

Room Tip: One side of the hotel faces the parking lot. The other is a "backside" that is sort of lik...

I was referred to this hotel by a friend and had a great experience. The hotel is seems brand new! Very clean and comfortable. I have recently been traveling to Santa Cruz every weekend for two months now. I have stayed at multiple hotels in the area and called about every one of them. Continental Inn is for sure the best bang for your buck. Plus checkout isn't until 12:00 ( I'm pretty sure at least).
