“If you like trains...or have a child..or like Redwood Trees....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

This is one of the semi-hokey tourist places that is actually worth going to. The trains themselves are fascinating and the rides through the redwood trees and down to the beach in Santa Cruz are beautiful....the train robbery and some of the staged events are silly, but kids like them.....a lot, usually.

“Hold on---cars off their tracks!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012 via mobile

I am writing this for my husband who took the round trip train on the steam engine from Felton, a short drive from Santa Cruz. This is a great introductory way to discover the redwoods, Bear Mountain, and to hear some history about the steam engine train and the area. He would recommend. But theres a p.s.---at one point the train ride became a bit bumpy, and when my husband turned around to view the two open air cars in back of them, he and his buddy saw people bouncing up and down, some were on the floor of the car and they found themselves yelling at the conductor to stop the train. Bottom line---the cars went off their tracks and it took an additional 45 minutes to fix the problem and complete the redwood experience. Thankfully no one was hurt. Husband said the conductor was calm about the whole thing and I am wondering if this frequently happens!

“Disorganized. Not that exciting.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012 via mobile

We went on this train ride because my son, almost 3, is a die hard train fan. It was very chaotic at the beginning, the train whistled and everyone just started boarding wherever. No clear directions given even tho there was a man with a microphone. We got caught up in a field trip. We're forced off our train and onto another. People would not make room. The man talked the whole trip and I could probably only hear /understand about 10% of what he was saying. The train is slow and does "switchbacks" to make it up the hill. It's chilly, take your coats.
Not much to see but there are some tall trees.

Overall, ok for the kids but get yourself a good seat where you can maybe move an inch to turn and take pictures of your kids.

“Take the train up to bear mountain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Had a great day at roaring camp and taking the steam train up the mountain was a very nice experience. Try to pick your visit carefully. The day I went Intel, the computer company had a corporate day, so the whole park was very busy.
