“AVOID - Broken heater and toilet!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2006

Unlike other reviews stated, this hotel actually looks rather nice. The rooms are pretty clean and the amenities are decent. However, there is basically no heat in any of the rooms! We were given a small space heater after complaining a few times (and the maintenance having "fixed" the heat), and when we asked for another space heater because we were in a suite, we were told that we had the last one! This makes me think that all the rooms are rather cold. Because of the heat problem, we were moved to another room, whose toilet didn't work! It flooded almost half our room, and we moved to another room at 8 am. Of course, this room was freezing as well. I have stayed at much cheaper places that could provide basic heat and functioning toilets! You might as well stay at a motel!

  • Liked — Continental breakfast
  • Disliked — Lack of heat and functioning toilet

After going from a suite in a 5 star hotel with a belcony hanging over the ocean in Montery Bay, my family and i stayed here. This place was crap! the web site looked nice and everything but it was all a lie. the "mountin view" room was just some dumppy , smelly, dirty, room w/ a view of a parking lot where a group of boys skate boarded every day. the beds were so unconfortable, im only 16 and my back hurt after sleeping on that bed. the room smelled funky and i didnt even want 2 take a shower in the shower stall b/c it looked so dirty. the only good part was the in-room fridge. the hotel only has one very slow moving elevator...i didnt mind since i like taking stairs.... Do not go 2 the "5 star" resturant on the top floor. the food was nothing special and it was wayyyy over priced! their creme brulee sucked. and i guess if u dont order their $70 carvir appitiser they immidatly assume that you are riff-raff and u dont recieve quality service. the only good part was the amazing view from the resturant! also you are able 2 walk to the beach from the hotel but everything else is pretty far away. my mom and i did walk to a near by grocey store...but it was really scary becuase the hotel is located right across the street from a bum/homeless person park. if u walk any where near them the stare at u and sometimes yell things at u they also smell. also the parking thing is riducouls! the car is so close to were you go to walk out of the hotel. u can actually stand and watch the guy pull you car up for you. i did not understand y they even had some one parking and getting your car for you.
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL UNLESS YOU LOOK AT THE ROOM FIRST AND MAKE SURE IT IS WHAT YOU WANT!
or just go stay at the hotel oceana!

I had read earlier reviews that were mixed - now that I have stayed there - I wished I had believed the bad reviews. NO air condintioning makes a real difference when you don't have a room that faces the ocean. In the back rooms (which are described as mountain view rooms but are really dumpster and parking lot view rooms) there were no breezes to reach us (even though it was a windy day) and unforturnately hot so the room was uncomfortable.

The hotel appears to be refurbishing the rooms but we were not in one - it was rather ugly and smelly with filthy carpets. It was however spacious and from peeking into a redone room they didn't look bad. Staff seemed nice enough - no complaints. The continental breakfast was ok with the basics (juice, milk, coffee, muffins) but not much choice. We got a fairly good deal and it was for only one night. If we had been staying longer or had paid more I would have been hopping mad and scrambling for other arrangements.

Booking over the phone with Mark gave me confidence in the hotel that it didn't deserve. He was so friendly but that is where it stopped. We checked in , no one else was at the counter but Gabrielle gave us a lukewarm gretting at best, like she was so bored to be working there. She gave us a key and when we asked for another key, was told hatefully, "Can't you make do with one." NO. We were on seperate schedules so we need two. Upon arriving at the room which smelled like mold, we found out we had a double instead of a king bed. Calling down we were told there was nothing else and so what did we want to do. No apology or anything to help. The room was a good size but had no tub only a shower that had rust all around the outside. We bought fabreeze to help with the ordor. I have been to S.B. many times and are trying to stay in lots of hotels to judge. Believe me, skip this one and go elsewhere. Horrible!!!!!

I did not read the reviews until after I stayed here. I thought the hotel was great. The room was facing the ocean which gave an incredible view and sea breeze. We stayed on the patio and watched the boats and sunbathers. The restaurant service and food was the best we had in Santa Barbara. I would stay here again.
