“Resort motel on a budget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

My mother and I stayed here while exploring Santa Barbara. We were staying in the cheapest rooms and they were luxurious. The front desk staff were helpful and knowledgeable. The cleaning ladies and gardeners were friendly. The motel and grounds were beautiful. The room looked great and had some amenities. The bathroom was a little small but clean and had a nice shower with a glass door instead of a curtain. Beds were comfortable with several different weighted pillows to choose from; we slept well. They have no continental breakfast but did have a fruit basket in their lobby in the morning. Their onsite restaurant looked nice but we did not eat there. I liked their aviary and lush hanging baskets. The motel is rather oddly located--seems to be a residential neighborhood. But it was not difficult to get to downtown SB, and the neighborhood seemed safe and quiet. We changed room dates at the last minute, but there must have been a cancellation because the staff kept us in the same room on the next day after initially saying we might have to move to a different room. In an effort to provide a more resort type feel, they have more expensive rooms with balconies that are near the pool/jacuzzi. There is even a masseur on site that I think charges $100/hr. For those willing to spend more, you will really have a luxurious experience, but still pay less than at many other upscale hotels in town. A first class motel in a first class city.

After researching reasonable options for our family of 5 adults, we booked a townhouse for our trip to Santa Barbara for a family wedding. I had some concerns when I made the reservation due to some mixed reviews in Trip Advisor, but went ahead after talking to the reservation person. We were very pleased with Encina Lodge and our accommodations. We had a 2 bedroom plus sofabed, 1 1/2 bath townhouse for 3 nights. Our unit (244) was very comfortable. If I had it to do again, I would choose Encina. It is an older hotel tucked into a neighborhood near the hospital and has ample, parking near each unit. Our unit had some nice updates (tile counter tops...etc.) and our beds were comfortable It is an excellent 3 star hotel. The location was great - not far from State Street, conducive to taking walks. The restaurant on the grounds is excellent (we ate many meals there) and has a great ambience for gathering, which we did a lot with extended family members. Very nice pool area next to the restaurant, which was in use much of the time we were there.

Room Tip: If going in August, book early as it is a busy season, especially for a townhouse or suite. Request...

There are many pros and cons to staying at the Best Western Encina Lodge.

Pros:
-Rooms are clean.
-One bedroom apartment we had was spacious. (our room was 301)
-The staff was very friendly and helpful.
-There is a restaurant and bar on the property,
-The property has a pool.
-A 5 minute walk to the Santa Barbara Mission.

Cons:
-Outdated decor- green carpet and cream wicker style furniture.
-A 15 minute walk to the center of town where all the restaurants, bar, and shops are.
-A 45 minute walk from the shoreline where the wharf is.
-No view outside of the windows whatsoever. It is right in the center of a residential area, and most windows you look out of you see more of the lodge.
-Room was not priced appropriately- rates were $248-278 during our stay.

Overall, our stay was fine. We are avid walkers when we travel, so the walking did not phase us. If you are not a walker, cabs are readily available and the front desk will call one for you.

There are a bunch of inns and hotels right on State Street in the center of town and facing the shoreline.

Stayed here for three nights for a trip to Sansum Clinic (great location for Sansum or Cottage Hospital). This hotel is older but extremely well maintained. Our room was a one-bedroom apartment style and was overall extremely clean; however, the bathroom was small. We didn't need to use the kitchen utensils, but they were also in a locked cabinet.

We did sit out by the pool and enjoyed it as they had tables and chairs. We also borrowed a movie from their library in the office for free.

We tried breakfast at the restaurant located on the property; however, could not recommend it. That said we did not eat at it a second time.

We stayed four nights in a 2 bedroom unit that was really great. Very clean, updated furnishings, large flat screen TV, DVD player and lovely, crisp linens on firm beds. I was a little worried about the decor and noise after reading a few other reviews, but everything was great when we saw the room. We did also have to ask to have the dishes & cutlery unlocked in the kitchen and, like several of the other reviewers, was told they would waive the usual $10 fee for us. Very friendly staff, little noise in our upstairs unit in the back. Parking a bit limited but we always found a space at the end of the evening. I would definitely stay here again!!

We stayed here last year in a standard hotel room. It was a quick one night trip and the room was perfect for that. We ended up in the restaurant a little late and there was just one other couple there, the owner, and a guy with a guitar. We stayed for several hours and had a blast. We also went to Santa Barbara a few weeks ago for a two night stay. Since we were traveling with college friends, we realized it be more cost effective to get a "suite" (two bedroom with living room and kitchen). The hotel is so close to state street, the mission, the bowl, etc. If you like to go to cities and take run in the morning, this is the perfect place. The rooms were clean and it really was just like we were in an apartment. We had a great time and it is our place of choice for SB visits!

We stayed in the upstairs two bedroom corner apartment with lots of windows and it was like being in someone's wonderful home. Such comfortable beds, lovely shower head, comfy couch, big T.V. We loved the pool and whirlpool and big pool towels. The neighborhood was quiet and so relaxing. The one thing was that the cupboards in the kitchen were locked when we got there and they usually charge $10.00 to unlock them. They waived the fee for us for some reason. In the future I would make sure they weren't going to charge me for unlocking the cupboards.
