“Great location and got upgraded as well”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

My wife and I stayed in the Canary for 3 nights during a California Fly-Drive holiday. Everything got off to a good start with a very efficient valet parking service and check in; the bonus was that we were upgraded to a suite which was very spacious and comfortable.

The location of the hotel is very convenient for the restaurants and shops of State Street and there is a very convenient shuttle that costs 50 cents each way (25 cents for seniors) that will take you down State Street to the beautiful Santa Barbara beach.

We ate breakfast twice in the hotel and was a little surprised that there was a charge for every item including coffee and juice. We are more used to paying say 25 dollars for a cooked breakfast including drinks. Despite this the staff were very friendly and the food and service was good.

The roof top pool is an excellent facility in the hotel but it can get busy up there. This is made worse when guests do not remove their towels from a sunbed when they have finished using it, resulting in other guests not knowing if it is free for them to use. We saw one group of 8 who had commandeered 8 sunbeds and in addition 8 chairs in one of the shady areas to eat their lunch.

From 5-6 pm each day complimentary wine is served in the lobby of the hotel. This is an excellent opportunity to talk to some of the hotel staff.

The Santa Barbara Courthouse is a short walk from the hotel and is well worth visiting. We also found the Hop-on bus tour a useful introduction to the city. Amongst the restaurants we particularly liked Bouchon. On May 1st we were very interested to see the mass evening cycle ride go along State Street; apparently this happens on the 1st of every month.

Room Tip: Our suite 215 was very spacious and comfortable.

. . . from the previous reviews posted other than the front of house staff are very pleasant. Rooms are ok but nothing special and on the small side, shower just about acceptable. Good a/c. Absolutely no information in the room about the hotel, surrounds or what to do in the locality. On the Saturday night the bar was so noisy with groups of rowdy male drinkers it made it an unpleasant place to sit and have a drink as a couple. Sunday night was pretty empty but the bar service was appalling with the guy talking to a local/regular (?) and ignoring us then, by his attitude, appearing to take offence that we asked for the wine list rather than ask his opinion. He provided the wine list but disappeared to the other end of the bar to speak to his cronies and in the end we gave up and went up to our room without getting a drink.. Worst bar we've been to during our 3 weeks in California. The 'hosted evening wine hour . . . as vintages are uncorked' is just pure hyperbole. The wines were from the same producer each night, a fairly ordinary cab & a chardonnay, and the seating in the lobby where it's hosted does not lend itself to guest interaction or socialising. The whole event needs re-thinking or abandoning. A grudging 3* due to the f-o-h staff and the good downtown location.

My wife and I were here for the tail end of our honeymoon, April 18-20, 2014. All in all, a great hotel (with one exception).

First the hiccup: We spent about 15 minutes in the hottub the first night and a little less the second. On the third day, our checkout day, my wife began breaking out in hives. Thinking they would go away soon on thier own, we washed them with soap and water and came back home. The small breakout was covering 80% of her body, and I had an outbreak as well. We each went to seperate doctors and they told it it must have been an infeciton from the hotub. Understading that these things happen, I called the front desk to let them know they should take precautions with the hotub on April 26. The attendant said that "he had heard there may be a problem", and thanked me for letting them know. The only odd part of this interaction is that he never apologized or expressed any understanding. It was in stark contrast to the other service we had recieved.

Service: The staff was excellent. Our room was upgraded for free at check-in and a bottle of champagne was delivered soon after check in. The staff was always accomodating, and our requests for directions, taxis, bicycles, etc., where always handled by the most throughful people.

Rooms: Great. I really like the peaceful decor and the spacious restrooms. The sleeping area wasn't the most spacious, but the french door windows more than made up for it. Bed was also super comfatble.

Amenities: The rooftop pool was fantastic, as was the rooftop bar and the bartender who worked it. The view cannot be beat.

I have stayed here a few times even though I am local. As a local, I appreciate the way the interior is set up as it truly encompasses the culture of the area. The service has always been decent as well. It is small but it is also downtown. There are minor things they could keep up with such as cracks that are visible etc. Love the Roof top pool area, another great spot to relax with friends!

I'm here right now. So far I've had to go back downstairs to get different key cards because the ones I was given didn't work (the man at the desk said when I asked for new ones that they hadn't been programmed by the woman who gave them to me). Next it was the hairdryer. It only worked on low, cold setting so we had to wait for them to bring a new one. The latest -- none of the network channels on the TV work. They're all snowy. An engineer is here as I write trying to fix it. Fun. We've only actually been in the room for a short time. So now I'm wondering what's next....this hotel is nice, but it's WAY WAY overpriced. I've loved the other Kimpton hotels I've stayed in, but they were worth what I paid -- and I never had to deal with annoying little issues like this at any of them. It's nice that it's so close to State Street, but that alone doesn't justify paying $400 a night, especially for a small room with one bed. I'd rather pay more for a hotel close to the beach. It's really no nicer than a well-kept Holiday Inn Express or a La Quinta. The decor, carpets and bedding aren't anything special compared to those hotels either. It's cute and the people are friendly. But not the best value.

The Canary is a wonderful place. My wife and I stayed here on our inaugural trip to SB. Located in the heart of downtown, it provides excellent access (walking or driving) to everywhere.
The staff and service is exceptional. The pool and restuarant are top of the line.

Went recently for a friends wedding. The pool area was really nice and the staff was nice. I was happy and surprised to see dogs were allowed. The room was in good shape and the bed was comfy..

The bar down stairs closed a little early but we found others in just a short walk.

The valet guys were really nice and so were the pool attendents/waiters.

Thank you for the great review and we looove our pool also! we think that it is truly one of the best views in town. Our four legged friends are some of our favorite guests here at the Canary and you are likely to see lots of cute pooches roaming our grounds. Hopefully we will see you in Santa Barbara very soon and thank you again for the great review!
