I attended a performance of a new ballet, "An American Tango", at the Lobero recently. As always, the theatre is a gem physically, with comfortable seating which allows a tall man to put his feet under the seat in front of him, with redone restrooms, and quiet, old comfortable decor. It used to be the place where our "Civic Light Opera" put on spectacular productions like "Showboat" and "Kismet", always with first-rate production, acting, and orchestra. Of course the town outgrew it for those purposes and now we have a larger theatre for those big shows. But the Lobero continues to be an esteemed venue for smaller shows like this wonderful production about the life and dancing of the famous team of Veloz and Yolanda. Unfortunately, there were only two performances, as the show has now travelled to New York for possible production there. But if you are in Santa Barbara and the Lobero is offering a performance by a chanteuse or a pianist, or a show, do try to visit it. But have some water before you enter. I have been attending the Lobero for thirty years, and the drinking fountain still doesn't work.
