“Not So Sunny in Santa Barbara”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We were disappointed with the front desk service. We had to ask the manager to receive a promotion (free breakfast) that seemed to been giving out freely to other guests upon arrival when we inquired about it. We were underwhelmed with the accommodations, asked to look at alternatives. When we voiced our complaints and observations regarding the carpets, cleanliness of room, etc., we were told it was a "unqiue" hotel. The GOOD THING about the stay was the hotel was just across from the beach and the products seemed in keeping with the standards you would expect from a Hyatt. We paided for valet parking thinking our car would be parked in their garage and protected from the ocean. We were surprised to get the car from the valet on Sunday morning with sand and dirt on the car with no explanation or apology. While checking out, we did get an opportunity to speak with Amanda (the manager) and she was extremely responsive and helpful. I feel she addressed our concerns and adjusted the cost of our stay accordingly. Having had this experience, we would return but by mindful of the cost of our room since this hotel is not up to the standard of the Hyatt hotel chain.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the far building from the lobby, they seem to be the nicest. Be mindful that most...

The good: the hotel is located on the beach and the staff is efficient and friendly

The bad 1: When we arrived the carpet in front of the bathroom was soaking wet. We requested at the front desk that someone come and clean it up. No one ever came.

The bad 2: There was a burned out light bulb that we requested be changed. It was not changed while we were there. Not a big deal really, but combined with number 1 above made us feel as though our requests were not important.

The bad 3: The room was noisy. The a/c wall unit was extremely loud and as it was an energy saver unit went on and off all night. It also blew cold air on us, our heads mostly, all night. The second night of our stay we opted just to be hot and leave the unit off. It also felt as though the door to the balcony didn't close tightly as we could hear conversations in the parking lot as though they were happening on our balcony. There was a banquet room near ours that had an event one night and fortunately it ended early as it sounded as though a radio were playing in our room.

The ugly: At check-in we were told we had a "mountain view" room. It was really a view of the parking lot with the mountains in the distant background.

We expected more from Hyatt and don't expect to ever stay at this hotel again.

For Hyatt property, it was not that great. Be careful of up-charges. They charged me 50 bucks "portage fee" to take things to my room. Great location but I wouldn't stay again. Air conditioner units were old and loud. Room was generally uninspired. My guess would be this place will be remodeled soon.

Let me start by saying we stayed at this property due to an event and the hotel was chosen by the event coordinator. We also had the "group discount". I would not have stayed here otherwise.

The best part about this hotel was the staff. Everyone from the Front Desk to the waiters, housekeeping, etc. were courteous, friendly, and helpful. I give this property a higher rating only because of the excellent service and staff. Service is 5 dots.

The location is also very nice since it is across from the beach and away from the center of controlled chaos by the pier. However, the property is also on the main boulevard which contributes to the noise factor. We had an ocean view room but note that you also view the busy boulevard and get the traffic noise. Rooms need better acoustical controls. Location is 4 dots.

Now for the hotel itself. In a word "Renovation". There are simply too many things to list that make this hotel unworthy of the price you pay regardless of the location and High Season rate.
This hotel has had many "soft" renovations which mean replacement of carpets, window coverings, bedding, paint, etc. over the years, and perhaps some items that desperately needed replacement. But everything is old, outdated, and tired.

The overall quality of this property is that of the Economy lodging level (Econo Lodge) for the Luxury lodging level (Four Seasons) price.

I will also note that you have to actually pay $10/day for poor (or $15/day for better) internet reception in your room. It is free if you step outside your room and in the lobby and other public areas. Hyatt, get a clue. Charging for internet service is like putting a pay phone in guest rooms. Stop trying to nickle-and-dime for internet service when it should just be part of the "Guest Experience".

Furthermore, the restaurant experience is also out-dated with way overpriced mid-quality food. For breakfast they offer a menu and a $22 buffet. I found the quality of the buffet to overpriced for the value. I also ordered off the menu - oatmeal for $15. The oatmeal was good but I'm sorry no bowl of oatmeal is worth $15.

Sorry Hyatt. You have a great location. However, it is time to stop squeezing blood from turnips, bite the bullet, and do your long overdue renovation and update the Guest Experience.

We are diamond members of the Hyatt chain. We are used to beautiful rooms and resorts. Hyatt took over this hotel from another hotel. They have tried to make it into Hyatt quality, but it doesn't quite reach that level. The rooms are spacious. We had an oceanfront room. It was nice, but still a little disappointed. The hotel itself is in three separate buildings. If you want to go to the restaurant or pool, you have to go to the main building. The pool was very small. It was clean and the kids seemed to like it. The spa is very small, too. If you want to spend the day on the beach, this is a great hotel. If you want a resort experience, you need to travel elsewhere.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the pool. It is very loud there.

Stayed here before and will continue to lodge here when we're in SB. Very satisfied at that time and even more during this stay as we had an ocean view. Very comfortable beds, pillows, and linens. Convenient parking and good internet. Restaurant has a lovely brunch for $20.

The hotel is in a great location--right across the street from the beach with beautiful views of the the ocean and mountains on the quieter end of town. Having a road in front of the hotel is a non-issue; it does not detract from the ocean views and beach hotel vibe. The train runs close by, but it is infrequent and non-obtrusive. There is ample street parking if you don't want to pay for valet. The hotel is divided into three buildings, which means you have to walk through buildings and parking lots to get to the pool and restaurant/bar if you are not staying in that building.

All of the staff we encountered were super nice and helpful. The bar has a decent happy hour. The bartender comped us drinks during happy hour because of some inconsiderate guest's screaming children that were running around the bar. That was really appreciated! We ordered room service after the cut-off time one morning and they were happy to accommodate us. Room service was fast, pleasant, and breakfast was great--good food and excellent coffee! We were upgraded to a king balcony by Omar, the manager. The bed is very comfortable and the pillows are SO comfortable--it was like sinking into a cloud! The room is outfitted with everything you might need, and if you forget something, they have a list of items they will bring you or that you can borrow.
If you book a regular queen or king, you will mostly likely be on the ground floor and looking onto the parking lot. There are a few non-balcony rooms with a view--be sure to request them. Otherwise, king deluxe rooms with a balcony are on higher floors and can look to the side with a partial ocean view, or to the back with a mountain view. These rooms are a good size, with a refrigerator, big flat screen and desk area. The king balcony ocean views in the front of the hotel have a higher price. The decor of the original building is beautiful. The public areas in the lobbies of the other buildings are furnished comfortably and have great views of the ocean. There are also patios with seating facing the ocean on the ground floor. Hyatt pays close attention to maintaining the period feel of the property. The property is obviously well-cared for.

Be aware that the pool and pool area are very small. If there are families with kids, the pool basically becomes a kiddie pool. The pool bar closes too early and there were not enough pool towels available in the late afternoon. Also, there is a $9.95 charge per day for in-room internet, which seems chintzy for a hotel of this caliber.

Room Tip: If you book a regular queen or king, you will mostly likely be on the ground floor and looking onto...
