“Good location and value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

We stayed here for only one night on our way up the coast. Room was clean and spacious and looked like it was recently renovated.
Kids enjoyed the pool. Breakfast was very good. Unfortunately the wireless did not work.
Staff was very friendly! We would stay here again.

Large property with two pools and many rooms. On the upper end of State St. which gives you easy access to the highway, close to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods and another chain grocery store and is across from a small mall. Not walking distance to town, but still a great location.

Our room was $200 per night. Horrible. Stained carpet with a hole in it, patched ceiling that hadn't been painted, stained pillow case. We asked to change rooms and the next room had so much mildew smell covered up with air freshener that we couldn't stay more than a minute and went back to the original room.

In our bathroom we found black mold in the corners between the wall and floor. There was a nice new granite counter and new tile floor, but with a 1950's tile shower that had been repaired badly. Blinds that had no handle to open or close.

A nice basket of items for showering and toothbrush and razor in case you forgot your own. Complimentary water bottles. Free breakfast: yogurt, cereal, juice, fruit, etc.

In speaking with management the next morning, they were apologetic about our stay and reduced the room to half rate.

Bottom line: I would rather see the hotel get rid of the free breakfast, water bottles and goodie basket and put money into the hotel itself so I could feel like I was staying in a clean environment.

This was a last minute stop as we were tired from driving and needed a place to crash. We paid $125 for the night and it was not worth it. The room had a musty smell in the air, which is why I'm guessing a maid left the door wide open onto the balcony, which is how we found the room when we entered. The shower had an even worse smell. I killed 3 ants and 6 flying little bugs in a matter of 10 min being there. The sheets felt moist and had I not been so exhausted, I would not have stayed the night. The only good thing was the breakfast variety.

We stayed in a single story room in a quiet area away from the pool, towards the back of the property. The staff were friendly and very pleasant. The bed was very comfortable and the room large enough. The bathroom had a bath as well as a shower. There was a fridge and a microwave and free bottled water. Fresh fruit was available at reception. It was easy to find this accommodation on State Street and across the road is a Whole Foods. There was a huge range of food from which to choose at breakfast and the breakfast area was very clean. Would recommend.

The Sandman Inn is inland, several miles up State Street. It is an old motel that has been restored and upgraded very tastefully. Our room was small but efficient and nicely appointed with a flatscreen TV, comfortable bed/pillows, and a light/airy bathroom. There was also a small fridge which came in handy. The pools were well maintained and there was a decent breakfast, though seating was pretty tight. Staff was helpful and cheerful and told us about Arroyo Burro Beach, about a 10 minute drive mostly through the hills. A small beach, out of sight of the city, with its own restaurant, was one of the highlights for us. We were also directed to the beautiful, historic Courthouse building and the view from the clock tower. The view of the mission at night was spectacular, another tip from the front desk.

Room Tip: Our room was right next to the pool and we were concerned about noise, but it wasn't a problem.

Big bedroom, clean, two swimming pools, free parking and breakfast until 10. Pretty good WiFi and the area around the rooms is nice and well kept, with a lot of flowers and just pretty in general. Room had a fridge and microwave and good a/c. Quiet area and right on State Street so it's easy and fast to drive anywhere.
Shower on the other hand was very old and very rusty, low water pressure and it takes long for hot water to start, so the shower was not good at all. Room was dark and the bed was not especially comfortable, seemed to be old.

The room we stayed in was not renovated completely, although I was told that all the rooms were renovated and looked as pictured online. Our room was not clean. The old carpet left our feet black. The bathroom floor was filthy. The room next to to us had its bathroom gutted, so you can imagine the noise. The staff was dismissive when I said that we wanted to take a nap mid-day and the workers were so loud talking on their cell phones RIGHT outside our room that we could not nap. This was at 3 pm, and the staff response was, "Yeah, they'll be finishing up soon, around 5:30 pm." Needless to say, napping was out the question.

The ceiling was so thin we could hear every step and toliet flush from the room above. With the driving back and forth to anything cool downtown, and the cleanliness, I wished we had paid more for a closer, cleaner place. (I do have photos of the paint peeling, small shower, the workman's tools ALL OVER THE BEDS in the room next door, as well as the garbage the workmen threw in 4 parking stalls. I need to upload the photos later.)

After complaining, the manager called to apologize and did make things better to an extent.
The plus is that there is a cute, well-stocked breakfast.

Room Tip: I wouldn't tell anyone to stay there at all, but if someone had to, I would say to make sure you...
