“Great Zoo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

This zoo is brilliant! it is small enough to really enjoy the whole experience, but large enough to have a good variety of animals and exhibits. The train ride around the perimiter is a good way to enjoy the zoo and give your feet a rest! When we were there a lot of construction was going on... which did make the visit less than spectacular, but when they finish it will be amazing again. It's nice to know that the people of a community will support a place like this - it's all private donations and volunteers! Be sure to go - good for adults and kids alike!

“Always fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

They're redoing the front area, and the landscaping in some areas looks a bit run down and uncared for. You can't expect Disneyland sparkle at $14 prices though.

“Our trip to Santa Barbara zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

The zoo is reasonably well sized and has good areas to sit and take in the views of the surrounding area. The enclosures for the animals and birds allowed good viewing. There were helpers around the zoo to help with information and directions. We used the electric shuttle to get to and from the zoo but if driving there is limited parking available.

“Nice park areas”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

This is a small zoo. Lovely parkland setting. Animals look lonely. Often only one or perhaps 2of a species. A great deal of renovations being done. The monkey area was lovely but only 2 monkeys. The enclosures were lovely and animals looked healthy but bored. Arrived about 3.30 and could not find anywhere still open to eat. So, advise to go early. Close proximity to town and a free shuttle available

Dean N, Public Relations Manager at Santa Barbara Zoo, responded to this review, April 1, 2013
I always appreciate it when our guests write reviews for Trip Advisor. It helps us identify areas for improvement and gives us the opportunity to answer questions or clear up any misunderstandings. Our exhibits are created with the natural behaviors and needs of the animals in mind, so some of the animals in the exhibits might not always be visible (they have places to hide or get a break from looking at visitors!). There are four primate exhibits at the Zoo: white-handed gibbons (Southeast Asia), lowland gorillas (central Africa), golden lion tamarins (coastal Brazil), and titi monkeys (Amazon rain forest). The pair of gibbons on exhibit, a species that is highly territorial, has raised five young who have all moved on to family groups of their own at other accredited zoos. There is a family group of two adults and two offspring in the golden lion tamarin exhibit. There is a family group of two adults and a male offspring in the titi monkey exhibit along with another pair of golden lion tamarins. Finally, there are two adult half-brother gorillas on exhibit. Per the regulations of the US Department of Agriculture and the standards of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, we provide "enrichment" for all these animals every day, creating fresh opportunities for them to exhibit natural behaviors and to respond to challenges such as finding a food reward in a "puzzle feeder." Our highest priority is animal care which includes their physical health as well as mental well-being. When it comes to feeding our guests, I'm not sure why it seemed that the restaurants were not open at the time of your visit. "The Wave" on the Zoo's hilltop operates from 10:30 - 4:00 pm daily and the main restaurant in the entrance courtyard is open from 10:00 - 5:00 pm.

“small but nicely done”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

Clean, well priced, friendly staff. It is in a beautiful location near the water. Lots of places to picnic, beautifully landscaped. There was a fun and educational show with Duncan the Dinosaur (a giant puppet.)
