“Best-kept secret on the Central Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2007

This is the second time I've stayed in this hotel and I loved it both times. It is going to be my "Same time next year" place. I stayed in an oceanfront room and had a great king-sized bed with upgraded linens and tons of pillows. The room had 2 overstuffed, comfortable chairs with an ottoman, a wood-burning fireplace, a large TV with a DVD player, high-speed internet, a wet bar, a ceiling fan (no AC needed) and a great bathroom with granite vanity, a large safe, closet with cedar-lined built-ins and a fabulous 70 gallon soaking tub with glass block wall to provide natural light. The decor was very classy and pleasing to look at.

I didn't take advantage of the restaurant that was on-site, as I've never been a fan of hotel restaurants, but Cambria was 10 minutes down the coast with its many quaint restaurants and cafes. The drives to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo were relatively short (30-45 mins) and I just took a trip down there on my first day and got lots of salads and fruit and stocked the fridge that came in the room. There was also a mini-bar, in case I got the munchies in the middle of the night.

Some other little extras that didn't go unnoticed by me were a very quality sliding door with extra security additional lock, and a small double-hung window next to it that I could keep open at night while I kept the door locked. There is nothing like hearing the surt while you sleep snuggled up in the duvet! There were also very nice lamps at the bedside that came on and adjusted by touching the knob. (They had a mind of their own though, and each morning, came on by themselves at sunrise - either that, or I was being visited by a poltergeist!) Another touch was a little light that you could touch to signal "do not disturb" or "housekeeping please"

Got daily newspaper delivery (USA Today during the week and LA Times on Sat and Sun).

There were 2 fire pits for the guests to gather around and 2 pools kept at a comfy 85 degrees (this is February, remember!) There were bathrobes in the rooms and also a pair of binoculars which I used to do lots of whale watching while sitting in my warm room next to the fire.

I could go on, but I don't want EVERYBODY to go there. I want to be able to get a room the next time I go!!

Stayed here for the weekend on our first year anniversary and we were not disappointed. We stayed in the ocean view room which was spacious and had a fabulous view of the ocean. Ordered room service the entire time of our stay and enjoyed most of the food. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Got to see the elephant seals what an awesome sight, it is mating season right now. I didn't realize how big the males got. What a sight.

The fire pits at dusk were the highlight of our day, met some wonderful people there and stayed at the pit for most of the evening.
For a relaxing time please come here. We shall return soon.

We recently spent two days over President's Day weekend in San Simeon for a brief getaway. Our main goal was to visit Hearst Castle, and the Best Western is only about four miles south of the Castle at a stellar beachfront location. We spent $89 for a Monday night standard room with AAA discount. I found that it was not necessary to spend extra for an "oceanview" room, because ALL the rooms have an oceanview! The standard rooms are in a U-shape with the U opening towards the beach, so you can still see the ocean from your window. Plus, you can hear the waves at night anyway.

This was our first time at a Best Western and we were pleasantly surprised! For being a pet-friendly location, the hotel room was absolutely spotless!! My only minor complaint is that the cups at the sink were slightly smudged. There was no lingering smell of smoke at all which we have oftentime encountered even in nonsmoking rooms, and there were plenty of given amenities (blowdryer, fridge, snack bar, iron, extra towels, extra pillows, soap, etc!).
We were also very happy with the internet connection, both wireless and LAN connection were available. The television also had local channels and HBO. Lighting was also ample, with cute touch-sensitive lamps (I wanted to bring one home!).
What was nice and in tune with this location's great service was a little card at the sink stating that other amenities were available at the check-in counter in case guests had forgotten their shaving razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. which we thought was a nice touch.

Speaking of great customer service, this place definitely had it (which again was surprising for such a large chain). The check-in employee was very friendly, pointing out our room location and giving us information upon request of the general area. The hotel also provides an information sheet detailing the times the sun rises, sun sets, and when the tides go in and out as the beachfront was definitely taken advantage of by all the guests.

In terms of the beachfront, you are only steps away from the sand. As other reviewers mentioned, there are fire pits located near the beach that all the guests shared, and everyone we met was very friendly!! We like this area a lot more than Monterey/Carmel. We also met other guests' dogs, who were leashed. Surprisingly, there were no droppings on the grass which meant that the grounds are pretty well-kept.

The restaurant located adjacent to and owned by the Best Western was only so-so. All the employees were super-friendly and again, had stellar service but this did not make up for the lackluster quality of the food. If you are looking for lunch or dinner, I would suggest driving down to Cambria. We had room service breakfast, which was standard fare and moderately priced, since there is no complimentary breakfast, so I would recommend their breakfast. The appetizers (rolls, soup, salad) were pretty good, but main entrees for lunch/dinner were not.

Anyhow, I honestly would give this hotel 5-stars for its rating, but I am subtracting a star since the walls are terribly thin!! We were lucky that our neighbors went to bed early, and were not disruptive, but sound could easily have been a problem! The walls were so thin, you could hear the neighboring bathroom toilet flushing, as well as hearing the little-louder-than-a-murmur voices of our neighbors. After experience in other locations, we have decided to always request a second floor room (we had #221) so I would assume that the first floor heard all of our steps.

I think that pretty much covers it! Bring warm jackets, as the beachfront can get chilly. Plenty of parking. San Simeon itself has nothing really in it, if you are looking for things to do within walking distance or at a shorter drive, I would suggest staying in Cambria. But we loved this place's quiet location. The only other things around this location are other motels/hotels. Cambria is a few short miles south, and has restaurants and shops. We took PCH/Highway 1 down to San Simeon, but if you do not want to deal with the drive from the bay area, take 101-south to 46 west to PCH north. It takes a little less despite being longer since you will be driving at a faster speed.

Happy travelling!!!

We have stayed here many times over the last 6 or 7 years and just checked out yesterday. We like the weather on the Central Coast this time of year with the temp's being in the low 70's, very nice. Jan. and Feb. are great times to come and see the elephant seals and watch the whales spout. The oceanfront rooms are nice but for around $225. they are a little high. Kings Row offers great ocean views and is about $100. less than the oceanfront rooms. The hotel is pet friendly and the nightly fires on the bluff overlooking the ocean is a great place to relax and socialize at the end of the day. There is no nightlife here whatsoever but it is a quiet and beautiful place to relax.

This is a great place to stay for the value. You can get ocean views and access for under $100 per nite. That is almost unheard of these days. The rooms are clean and spacious. There is an excellent resturant on the property. We ate all our meals there. The place is pet friendly, in fact we were going on a tour of Hearst Castle which is only about 2 miles up the road and couldn't take our pet with us. The Cavalier gave us the name of a pet sitter who came to the resort and stayed with our pet for a few hours while we were gone. She was very reasonable and it was worth knowing our little pet was safe and taken care of. I would definitely go back to this resort, though next time I would request a room with a fireplace. That would make it even more cozy.

We booked two nights for our 10th anniversary and I wish we could have stayed a week. We started the day with coffee on the patio enjoying the morning breeze and pounding surf. We ended each day sitting on the beach watching the sunset and then back to our room for a fire. I have never slept on a more comfortable bed in a more relaxed place than this. It was worth every dime if you are looking for a weekend away.

The Cavalier is fabulous! The location couldn't be better. The rooms are large and clean. The bathrooms are large and clean. The grounds are beautiful. The proximity to the ocean is great.
The hotel was decorated for Christmas and even had a little Christmas tree in the room. There are also binoculars to use during your stay. Be sure to bring them to view the seals up the road. Also, plenty of seals and birds to watch from your room.

We stayed in an oceanfront room and loved the sound of the waves that put us to sleep at night.

We ordered room service a few times and it was good. The restaurant was also fine. We only went for breakfast once. It's a bit like a Denny's, but the food was good and the service was excellent.

The bonfires are a great place to sit and relax and it's fun to walk around the grounds and chat with other guests and their pets. We really enjoyed the poochies that were visiting.

We liked being away from all of the crowds in the hotels on Moonstone Drive in Cambria. Cambria is close and has some great restaurants. We tried Robin's and loved it. Also "The Hamlet" Moonstone Gardens restaurant was excellent. It has a beautiful view of the ocean and great food.

Did the Hearst Castle tour, it's become a bit of a zoo, but worth a look. The seals are a definite visit up the road. Cambria is small and touristy, a lot like Laguna Beach, CA., with some excellent restaurants. Didn't spend a lot of time there.

It's only about a 13 mile drive south to Cayucos and Morro Bay. Both really cool towns. Also, check out the little town of Harmony..population 18. Really quaint.

Also, check out Ragged Point, a few miles north of San Simeon. An easy drive with a spectacular destination.

The staff at the hotel was great also.....the whole experience was an A+ and we would definitely return!
