“Wish I could keep it a secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2012

My husband and I have been coming to stay here for four years. Most people stop here because they are going to Hearst Castle or going up the coast. We come here as a destination. I noted this motel when we were going up the coast. After we first stayed here I vowed to come back.It is right on the ocean and at night they have " bonfires" in outdoor fireplaces and they have lights on the ocean so you can see it at night. There is a restaurant next door and Hearst Castle is right up the road.

Room Tip: Ocean views are wonderful but there are benches to sit and watch the view.

We' ve been there 8 years ago and we liked it. 8 years later it's still a good place to stay. Clean room, beautiful place. it's the best place for a break on the road between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Close to sealions beach also. The restaurant is very good for dinner, but too expensive for breakfast.

We booked this room for one night since it had great reviews and wanted something close to the Hearst Castle. We had 3 in the room and 2 queen beds. The room was bigger than I expected and the vanity area with upgraded granite was a nice touch. Lots of amenities - Bath and Body Works lotions and conditioners. Loved the beach area and the bonfires at night. Great for sunset watching. Our room overlooked the parking lot, but still had nice views of the mountains and the beach. Would have enjoyed a flat screen tv - the tv was really outdated, but otherwise the room seemed to have been updated recently.

I hesitated to share this review because I want to be certain there was a room here the next time I came. First of all, I have been coming here for 10 years, several times a year. The King's Row rooms are my usual choice for the views of the ocean and the ocean sounds 24/ 7. I truly believe that everyone who stays has pets. When I checked in, they knew I had a dog but they asked how many. That's so they can provide the proper amount of doggie towels Fire pits along the upper shoreline overnight for their guests. Nice beds, nice towels, a fireplace, refrigerators, and an upscale feel. On a budget? Then pick the rooms not facing the ocean, and for a surge the rooms closer to the water. I spent my birthday in those, and they sent champagne ln. There's an on-site gym. Great staff, clean and fabulous.

We wanted to stay close to the beach in the Cambria area. Cambria was too pricey we thought, so we settled for the Best Western in San Simeon. For the most part we were very pleased with this place. Our room was not beachfront, but we could see the ocean and the beautiful grounds and watch the wind surfers from the entryway. We enjoyed the grounds in the evening where we sat by the fire on a rather cool evening. The room was fine -- not huge, but it worked for the two of us. The fireplace was a nice plus. The restaurant was very good -- we were there for both dinner and breakfast. I wouldn't call this place a bargain ($150 - AAA) as the price didn't even include breakfast , but it was an enjoyable stay.

The hotel itself is very nice. We finally received an oceanfront room on our California coast drive that had a HUGE private balcony. Finally, we could relax and enjoy the beach!! Rooms were spacious and had cozy fireplaces which kept the room nice and toasty. Furniture, finishes, and toiletries were all top notch.
Rooms had a nice sized bar area, complete with a stocked mini ref. and a snack basket, but prices for these items were OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!
I really wanted to be able to give this hotel 5 stars, but I couldn't because of the service received, and the fact that their hours and rules were not accomodating to people's needs. For starters, check-in was very slow. Although we received a great oceanfront room, I specifically asked for a first floor room and was given one up A LOT of steps. Everything at this hotel opened late, and closed at 9PM, which is WAY too early. When you are at the beach you should be able to use the pool past 9PM. Laundry hours are 9AM to 9PM. When people are traveling they need to get started earlier and it is impossible to have your laundry done by 9PM when you are on the road. We had to get a maintenance employee to unlock the laundry room so we could retrieve our dry things at 9:30. The employee was very kind, and said he understood and tried to help people out, but said management ordered him to keep it locked from 9PM to 9AM. The restaurant was also rather unaccomodating as it did not open until 7:30. The Hearst Castle opens at 8AM, so it was impossible to eat before you leave. People who are traveling need to get up and get going. Also seemed a little unreasonable for the restaurant, and especially the lounge, to close at 9PM. Many people want snacks and drinks in the evening.
There were also a few issues with the bathroom. The main light, sunlamp, and exhaust fan were all hooked together on the same switch, making it impossible to use each one separately. The tub was HUGE and nice, but I really couldn't understand why it didn't have a jacuzzi. There is also a row of glass blocks between the bathroom and bedroom which makes the bathroom light shine right in your eyes if you're in bed.
We could not understand why all the oceanfront rooms are Kings. They are VERY spacious, and could have easily accomodated 2 or 3 beds. It seems that they are trying to discriminate against families.
With a few changes in services and extended hours, this could be a top rate hotel.
