“Consistently good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

This hotel is consistently good. We have been coming to this hotel for approx. 10 years for a couples get-away. On the southern boundary of Big Sur, near Hearst Castle, it's a great location for exploring the Central Coast of California.

There are 3 types of rooms: motel style (by front desk and resturant), larger rooms with fireplace/lg balconies facing ocean(Kings Row), super large suites on bluff overlooking ocean.
we stay in Kings Row because its larger and nicer then the motel rooms (which are very nice also, but smaller). The rooms are clean, updated and quiet (kinda).

The location is really nice. Ocean just outside the balcony. This hotel has 3 fireplaces on ocean-bluff that are lit each evening around sunset causing guests to come out (with gloves, jackets and headgear if needed) with drinks.

The restuarant is -ok-. The food is not anything to write home about, but is super convienent. We normally go into nearby Cambria for meals. Just a short 5 min. drive. But a spectacular drive!

Drawbacks:
The bathrooms could be updated. Add better heating, better flooring, etc.
Restuarant: work on the menu and food. I had sliced turkey dinner. it was very disappointing: turkey was sandwich type (!!!), i was expecting thick dinner slices. Hotel staff: please work on this if you are reading.

Suggestion:
Add a nice bar/pub. with the location it would be unbeatable.

Like the hotel and plan to return soon.

Room Tip: Great for those with pets. Spend a little more and get room in Kings Row.

This was the second time I have stayed here and has been remodeled very nicely. The ocean views are absolutely killer and there is easy access to the beach. Great rates and super close to Hearst Castle. I always appreciate a restaurant on the premises after a long day of traveling.

Room Tip: There are several different choices for views so make sure to ask.

Missed the Hearst Castle tour? Stay close by in a clean and what would be a fairly average hotel if not for the little extras. Fireplaces, beautiful views, and a very friendly staff.

Another fantastic time at this great hotel. My two children and I have be coming here for several years now and it just gets better. We rang in 2012 w/complimentary party favors for the kids and some champagne for mom. They've updated some of their fixtures/amenities with granite or granite type counters, a Keurig coffee maker and an iHome (which my teenaged kids appreciated). Plush comfy beds, firepits at night and steps away from the Pacific Ocean ... it doesn't get much better than that! The weather was sunny and my kids swam every day (ok, the pool was heated but it was still 70 degrees outside). As always, this hotel is very pet friendly requiring no deposit for our dog and there is a large green area to walk your pet. This is a wonderful, reasonably-priced property right on the beach. You can't go wrong.

We unfortunately arrived 6 hours later than planned due to having to turn back on the highway 1 due to a rock fall that closed the roads so we were unable to fully enjoy the views and location of this hotel.

The hotel is based right on the beach and the views are wonderful, our room looked out onto the ocean. There are fires lit in the garden which The hotel had left us a bottle of champagne in our room as we were on honeymoon - nice touch :) The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was large and spacious. There was every type of sample product in the bathroom you can think of so no need to worry if you forget your washbag!

The breakfast at the diner was delicious. Shame we couldn't stay longer

Room Tip: ask for a room nearest to the ocean

This hotel is a 5 minute drive from Hearst Castle. Very hospitable staff; even when checking in around midnight. We had a tremendous view of the Pacific- ask for room 210! The firepit out near the beach is a wonderful touch. Comfy bed...all the extra amenities you could want. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: For a perfect room facing the ocean, ask for 210- a great King size suite!

First of all- do NOT drive down Highway 1 from Carmel to Cambria at night. The drive was a nightmare. We were over-joyed to arrive at this hotel with a good restaurant next to it. Nice location, but it was very cold, foggy, and windy over the holidays. I would recommend coming here in the summer to visit. Walked on the beautiful beach. Nice big bathroom. A bit pricey for winter!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a good view if you can.
