“Excellent Choice for Ocean View in Cambria”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2007

As, I read and take very serious what others say of the places they stay. I wanted to add my voice on this property. It is excellent as other reviewers have said. Really, Really nice. Of all the Ocean view properties in Cambria this is the best. It sits by itself versus the other properties, as the ones on Moonstone Beach. Those looked nice, some, but they were "all right next to each other"..no privacy..non..So, everything the property says is true and the staff is excellent. The only issue we had was the fireplace..keeping it going. You need a few starters.. Otherwise it was like a mini Ritz. We liked it so much we are going back for Christmas time, and that was my husbands thinking! The restaurant was good, actually very good..locally grown items..beef from the Hearst Ranch and such. So, don't let the Best Western name fool you..I realized on this trip up the coast, that most of these "Best Western's" are family owned or small hotel groups. Very well taken care of. So, treat yourself, get a ocean view room or ocean front & watch the Sunset & the Moon rise & set..WOW! Enjoy!

We came upon this little gem by chance after driving the Big Sur highway all day. It wound up being the best hotel of our two week CA driving trip and not as expensive as many others. The room was immaculate, well appointed, high end toiletries, a wood burning fireplace, firepits on the bluff overlooking the ocean to enhance sunset viewing & a very friendly , accommodating staff. There were many thoughtful, unexpected amenities available both in the room and on the premises. Their restaurant is on the property & an easy walk if you don't opt for room service. We visited the Hearst Castle (a 10 min. drive) and the back road wineries of Paso Robles during our stay. We liked it so much, we stayed an extra 2 days. We had an oceanfront room with balcony on the second level, leaving the door slightly ajar to hear the waves. PERFECT!

We drove into San Simeon and chose this motel at random. It was excellent. Price was reasonable. We had dinner from room service sitting on our balcony watching the sun go down. Room was well appointed, clean and comfortable.

We walked down to the fire pits that they light every night and enjoyed a seat around the camp fire

In the morning we had a wonderful walk on the beach

Highly recommended

Extremely well run motel with a TERRIFIC location right on the water. Get a room with a water view or partial water view and enjoy the sunset.

Service was excellent. There's not much directly around the hotel, but it's a quick drive to Cambria where there is great food and fun shopping.

We stayed here as a half way point on our drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Our room was an Ocean View room with a double bed, fireplace and verandah with table and chairs to relax and enjoy the view of the ocean.

Our room was very clean, the bed was very comfy, the bathroom was great.

The pools looked good and clean although we didn't use them. Sitting around the open fire in the evening and chatting with other guests about their travels was also enjoyable.

The service at check in and check out was wonderful as were the staff when I needed help with directions.

Loved it here...be sure to go for a stroll along the beach at sunset too.

This place was great! The rooms were perfect, the staff ultra helpful and friendly, the beach is awsome, as well as the bon-fire pits they have going each night.

  • Liked — The bon-fire pits they have going every night right off the beach.
  • Disliked — Everything was perfect! No complaints.

The hotel is a little pricey but it can't be beat for a special occasion or well deserved holiday. The rooms at the ocean edge are lovely, clean, and the sound of the ocean at night makes all the cares of life disappear.

I last stayed here ten years ago and I was so afraid that the special feeling that this resort provided might have changed. But...no worries. And while I may have been less than satisfied with the reservations attendant on the telephone the actual check in was painless, the package we had signed up for was carried out without a hitch.

It was our one year anniversary and we had purchased the Hearst Castle tour with champagne and dinner included and an ocean front room.

The rooms by the ocean are just wonderful...I have always stayed on the ground floor but I believe next time I will sign up for the second floor as it affords a better view (they have hedges as protection on the bottom so no one falls off the cliff ..) and more privacy. You will want to keep your door and the curtains pulled open..the sound is amazing.

The restaurant is excellent for some meals and okay for others. Depends who is in the kitchen. Friday our dinner was fabulous, breakfast the next day was slow but the eggs benedict with the addition of spinach was so delicious I forgot my impatience. Dinner on Saturday was really not cooked to order but the waitress was delightful and dealing with an overworked kitchen. Forgivable... Breakfast on Sunday was spot on.

The location and overall peace of the resort is a treat that I will continue to reserve for those special times. Enjoy.

  • Liked — The room and the ambiance...
  • Disliked — I love this place...but I still think it is a little pricey....
