I chose this hotel in part because I thought the large lawn, indoor pool and hot tub looked appealing. As it turned out, we used none of these, but we were pretty pleased with our stay nonetheless. The room was clean and the bed extremely comfortable, though toiletries are basic, and there’s no hairdryer. No breakfast either. Some fruit and yogurt wouldn’t be out of place given the price, but I think you’re paying for the location. San Simeon is the closest place to Hearst Castle.
If I were returning to the area, I’d prefer to stay a few miles down the road in Cambria, which has a lot more services than San Simeon. You’ll have to drive there anyway if you need gas or groceries. There seems to be only one little store in San Simeon, and it was closed the day we were there.
For dinner, we walked to Manta Rey Restaurant, located at the nearby Quality Inn. If we had known ahead of time, we’d have booked their package that includes dinner for two, bottle of wine, buffet breakfast (at another restaurant, probably the one at Motel 6) and Hearst Castle tour tickets for two. It costs $99, about $25 less than if you pay separately for these items. The only snag is that you have to book online at least 24 hours in advance, which simply didn’t work for us.
If you see what look like zebras near the motel, don’t worry – you’re not losing it. These are descendants of the animals William Randolph Hearst kept in his private zoo. They graze on Hearst property and are sometimes visible along the roadside.
