“Missed a live birth by less than an hour.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

There were hundreds of elephant seals on the beach. We enjoyed watching the new mothers "protect" their pups from the sea gulls. Too bad they wasted so much energy. The gulls were only interested in clean-up.

“Do. Not. Miss. This.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

We visited for a third year this January, on our journey from LA through Big Sur to Carmel and then San Francisco. This year's experience was the best ever, with warm, sunny temperatures making it easy to just stand and observe for a long time. We saw moms and babies - lots of them - and even a whole bunch of giant dad elephant seals this time. Lots of action, including males sparring, swimming, and even attempting a little early season noon-nook with a few females!

People, it's like walking into a National Geographic special. It's free and it's all about nature, and about something that happens every season, without human intervention. I am moved to tears every year. it's free, and easy. You just pull into the parking lot, walk over, and observe. There are stories and docents to help with education. Stay as long as you like.

Your pictures will be your favorites once you get home, and you will talk about the experience for a long time to come. If it's chilly, bundle up so you can watch these magnificent creatures for a while. Just don't miss it on your way into or out of Hearst Castle and Big Sur.

“Fascinating!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

I was truly in awe watching the sea elephant colony. What a site to see. Essentially this is just a stop almost like other observatory spots you can stop at along the PCH. There is a large parking lot and you just park and walk over to the stone walls that overlook the beach where these fabulous creatures call home. I could have watched them for hours!

We went as a family with teens and adults. Everybody enjoyed. We stopped here after visiting the Hearst Castle, which is a few miles south of this spot.

“Amazing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

My husband and I were delighted with our stop to see the elephant seals. We were lucky enough to visit at the time they were birthing and saw several newly born seals. Amazing how absorbing it can be to watch wildlife.
