“Lovely location and restaurant right on highway 1”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

We recently stayed at the ragged point inn and really enjoyed the inn as well as the restaurant. The inn is located at the southern end of the big sur highway one road which is perfect for either direction. Whether you've spent the day travelling south or as an excellent location to start the road north on the following day. Though your close to Hearst castle and elephant seal beach, your also on bluffs that typify the beauty of this stretch of the coast. Fortunately we arrived in time to enjoy the grounds and lovely views for sunset.
The rooms are easily the best value for the quality along the coast withlarge spacious rooms complete flat screens etc if you choose to use them. Previously we'd stopped just to eat the inns restaurant and once again it provided cuisine of a really good quality. We really like that it has a wide ranging menu including vegetarian food. Each of us ordered completely different styles of food which were prepared to a high standard. Good wine list and very good service throughout the whole complex. We'll definitely enjoy revisiting ragged point.

Room Tip: Spring and fall are the best times if you want to enjoy the beautiful ocean views from your room.

I had high hopes for our 3 night stay here. I have no issues with the room but the restaurant is best described as a shambles! There simply weren't enough staff. Most of the time there was no one on the front desk and despite making a reservation we were kept waiting and a table had to be cleaned.
I think it is truly outrageous that they charge for a terrible Internet service.
When we requested assistance with booking 2 restaurants in Carmel the receptionist advised us to use the pay phone . I would not expect this from an establishment that charges premium prices!!

Splendid views, peaceful sight, isolated. I always go back in my mind when I need to relax. The hotel has good service obviusly, it may nos be for every one or for a very long stay. But for me it was an exciting and relaxing surprise

The location was awesome, no problems there. But the whole little Ragged Point "complex" was a bit dated, and I reckon the owners could do with spending a bit of money to spruce it up a bit.

The room was massive, but a bit beige and dated-looking. It was clean though, and they supplied a good amount of coffee, tea, biscuits and that sort of thing.

The restaurant was OK - a bit pricey for what it is, and the waiting staff weren't great, but again, acceptable.

I think it's probably just the location, but this was one of the most expensive places we stayed during a trip around California, and probably one of the least impressive.

Our Drive along Highway 1 is at the top of all our trips, because of the beauty and the freshness of the air. During our last trip up the coast 2011, we had stopped to have lunch at the
ragged point cafe, and noticed the real nice rooms of the Inn. We ask about availability of a room, but they were booked solid, so we just went on are way, very disappointed. We do not call and make reservations on these drive vacations, because we don't want to b e on schedules of any kind, so doing a walk in at hotels, and inns can be disappointing. This time the Ragged point Inn had a few rooms available, and we took one on the cliffs. Very nice rooms, and great views of the ocean. The rooms are a little pricy, but the stay is worth it. We would recommend this Inn for any one going up the coast, it is a very nice place to stay, and a good food at the cafe. Nice hiking trail, down the cliff, but you need to be in good health. Do not buy gas at their station, it was $5.89 a gallon, and the gas station at Gorda was $5.99 a gallon, where is the controls for these prices.

Room Tip: We stayed in the single building rooms, (No upstairs) and they were nice, but we think the 2 story r...

I have stayed at Ragged Point four times. The view is incredible and most if not all rooms have a stunning view of the ocean and beautiful coastline. I never get tired of that view. The inn itself is a somewhat-remodeled motel and retains that ambience. Our room was large and comfortable with a gas fireplace, balcony, table and chairs, and king size bed. The room decor reminded me of a country style bed and breakfast. It was clean but a very dated look. The bed linens and pillows were budget grade. The bathroom was roomy with a jetted tub, comfortable but very stark. The grounds are gorgeous and I find it enchanting to walk around and soak in the beautiful view. Lots of beautiful native plants and flowers and numerous spots for picture taking. The restaurant has surprisingly good food but the ambience is awful and the service is medicore at best. There is a wine bar / espresso bar next to the restaurant which inexplicably faces the parkng lot and the highway and again has zero ambience. It is not an attractive or pleasant place to relax. Would be nice to have a view of the grounds (if not the the ocean). Expresso bar has good coffee but serves stale baked goods. They microwave the pastries to try and get them to taste fresher but overall the pastries, pies, cakes, are awful. The outdoor snack bar serves up good burgers, fries, sandwiches, milkshakes and also overlooks the parking lot and highway 1. Again, not a place to relax and linger. The mini-mart has a small selection of overpriced snack foods and drinks.

I have to agree with other comments about the rudeness at the check-in. Completely unnecessary and ridiculous. The management should wise up and do something about that!

So why 4 stars? The view and the grounds. Just amazing. Very romantic and a fraction of the price of the Post Ranch up the road. My advice? Spend an extra $25-$40 on a deluxe room (you'll get a microwave and fridge). Stock up on wine, cheese, fruit, other picnic-type snacks in Cambria. Have a romantic indoor picnic in front of the gas fire overlooking the ocean. Relax in the jetted tub. Stroll the grounds. Take lots of pictures. There is a lot of beauty and romance here.

This is our second trip to Ragged Point this year. Before we went for our last trip, I decided to read the reviews on TA and see what others had to say. As I as reading them, I thought they couldn’t be talking about the same Ragged Point Inn. I could not believe what others travelers had to say.

My husband and I enjoyed a very quite weekend here in April and Sept. Sandy checked us in both of our trips. She even remembered us the second time. The location is right on the cliffs above the ocean. Most rooms have a view. Upper rooms have a balcony, but very small. Lower level rooms have a small patio. Grounds a kept very clean and beautiful. We were in room 32, upstairs on our first trip and in room 38, upstairs on our second trip. The room was very large and very clean. No closet, just a rod to hang clothes on. The rooms have been freshly painted, but there was not much in the way of decoration in the room except for two paintings on the wall. They need to add some decorating touches. Otherwise room was very nice. The fireplace is the heater and works very well. We had two sinks, one inside the bathroom and the other just outside. We did not have a fridge, which would have been nice. We had to keep going down to get ice to keep our drinks cold.

Be prepared, buy gas in Cambria or better yet Morro Bay. There is a gas station at Ragged Point, but the price was more than shocking. In Sept the price was $5.89 a gallon. That was almost a dollar more than Cambria. The next gas station is in Gorda and their price is even higher than Ragged Point. There are no other gas stations going north until almost to Carmel.

Room Tip: Room 32 or 38
