“A night time fantasy and what it must have been like in the day!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

During the holiday season the Castle which is an attraction run by the California State Parks offers evening tours. This tour is very popular so it is a must to make a reservation. This tour is very complete. It requires lots of walking and steps so take comfy shoes and it gets chilly so dress warmly. During this tour they have people posing in period so it gives you a glimpse of what it might have been like in the day. The guides are very knowledgeable and attentive. Shout out for Daniel. He had a answer for all questions asked. I learned that for small groups I believe of 8 one can arrange for a 3 hour private tour. It is more expensive but probably more intimate and more leisurely. I think I will try that next time. While one can grab a bite at the center below there is no food or drink allowed nor flash on cameras. This is really a must if touring the central coast.

“Once upon a time in paradise.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

A glimpse a one America's richest family estate. They started building it in the early 20th century. The "castle" as locals call it, is filled with architecture treasures from around the world.
It is a magical place set on top of hillside over looking the Pacific Ocean. The details in each room are amazing. The view from the garden and the pool spectacular.

“Interesting history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

What an absolutely beautiful building and gardens. The castle is magnificent and the treasures inside are priceless. Went on a 2 hour guided tour of the bottom floor of the castle and it was just fantastic. After the tour you are allowed to walk the grounds for as long as you like. How I would have loved to have a swim in that beautiful pool !!! Book the tickets online, park in the carpark down the bottom of the hill at the main office and then catch a shuttle up to the castle. The main office has a restaurant, theatre, bathroom and souvenir shop. The castle tours are definitely worth visiting and there are plenty of scheduled times.

“Tour it at least once in your lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

My husband and I have driven thru the area many times, but never toured this property. We decided this time we would pay the fees and do it. We both agree it is well worth seeing; if only because this sort of personal excess is astounding to behold. The estate is now run by the California Parks and hopefully the monies charged is put to good use. The personal art collection is museum quality and everything is beyond elegant. Viewing the gardens and pools alone are worth the visit. I'd suggest you reserve your place on-line and plan to eat before you come. The gift shop/eateries are overpriced and nothing special. Free parking and shuttle to the "castle". Be aware there are steps to climb. I was thrilled to learn Mr. Hearst hired and compensated well a female architect for this years long project. A true bygone era. I could not help but wonder what solid works of philanthropy could have been accomplished had Mr. Hearst lived more modestly, but it was his money and his choice. As my friend says, "I wasn't on the board" at the time. Just enjoy yourself.

“Magnificent must-see site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

What William Hearst created is truly breathtaking and magnificent. His collection and acquisition of authentic historic furnishings, paintings and ornaments combined with an ambitious architectural masterpiece is everything dreams are made of. We did the ground floor tour but I think if had the time the day tour would have been well worth it.

Also watch the 30 minute film it leaves you with greater appreciation of the mastermind that was William Hearst.
