“Extreme Oppulance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

It was amazing - yes. I could not get over the incredible effort that went into creating this place and the cost to do so. It was really beautiful - mind blowingly beautiful. I am just thankful that Mr Hearst donated the property to the State of California for the public to see. A total must do if in the area!!

“Worth the Visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

Very well maintained site with a lot of history as well as beautiful landscapes, the place is a great alternative for those traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The tour guide was very attentive and had many interesting stories to tell about the place. In the end a very interesting movie about the location and pictures of hollywood stars such as Charles Chaplin playing tennis there some years ago.

“Expensive if you want to see it all”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

The grand rooms tours was very short and poor value. We just can't understand why there are a) no senior discounts b) why they don't sell a combined tour ticket at a reduced rate. Coming from a country with a great deal of old buildings it was not easy to be impressed by this Disney-esque theme home. Yes of course an impressive endeavor but in the end building a Mediterranean home on a California hill (and not the most glorious hill at that) was hubristic and tasteless. Admire it for the commitment but depise it for the self obsessed aggrandisement of a far too rich man.

“Thought it was just another weird house, I was wrong!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

If you have a taste for european ancient and classic antiques, this is the place to visit! W. Hearst had an amazing collection. My best tip is to buy the ticket for all three tours, you won't regret it:) The castle and it's surroundings is a picture of a great man... Simply stunning!

“Overrated. Overpriced. But has to be done.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

If we didn't go here I'd be wondering what it was like. It is an expensive 40 minute tour and the tour guide make an assumption that everyone knows who the Hearst family are. A bit more background info would be helpful. After a paid tour ($25) visitors are free to wander the grounds at their leisure. However, the tours are divided into different sections. The Grand Rooms tour is the most popular but showcases a small portion of the castle. A constant is the entry to Edinburgh Castle, similar price with unlimited access to all facets of the castle. Not good value for money but it's gotta be done. What we saw was pretty impressive; a small insight into a megalomaniacs lifestyle.
