I stayed at the Sands in June 2004. The accomodations are basic (if you're driving, maybe bring along your favorite pillow because the ones in our room were flat!), but very adequate for the price. (We paid about $85/night on a weekend.) The rooms are well sound-proofed (I think - there were people on both sides of our room and we didn't hear them), and it's right by the ocean - great for taking a morning jog. This is a great stopping point if you are on your way to Big Sur from Southern California (Big Sur is about 2 hours from San Simeon) and don't want to spend $200/night. My one complaint is that our heater, while very warm and on a great thermostat (as the other reviewer mentioned) made some clicking noises - I'm a light sleeper and it was a little rough for me. But overall, Sands is a great bargain for the area.
