“Quiet, relaxing and peaceful honeymoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

My husband and I spent the first half of our CA honeymoon here and LOVED it! We were actually booked to stay at the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara and based on a friend in Malibu's advice decided to stay at Sycamore. We are happy with our decision. I am big on service and Sycamore does not excel in this area. However, the quiet atmosphere combined with a beautiful room and private tub helps you forget about the mediocre service. The bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed a good nights rest, soaks in the tub, the Labyrinth, hiking trail to the beach and friendly people in Avila Beach. We didn't eat at sycamore at all as we were advised the food was just okay, we found great food in the surrounding areas. We did do the Happy Hour one night but didn't find it a great value, service just okay but the apps were very good. Loved breakfast and dinner at Old Custom House and breakfast at Avila grocery. Lunch at Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach was great, chowder was awesome and we know chowder being from New England. We also enjoyed the SLO Farmers Market, more like a festival than Farmers Market! We had a wonderful first half of our honeymoon and enjoyed every moment at Sycamore.

It was our anniversary. We’d been planning it for months. The focus of our trip was always going to be the resort itself—especially our private hot tub since I suffer from joint and back pain. But just a HALF HOUR before our check-in time, they call to tell us that, as a result of “maintenance problems,” we would have to be moved to another resort altogether. They assuaged us by promising it would be just as nice; a place “right on the ocean.” But the room we actually got cost half as much as the one we’d booked at Sycamore, didn’t even have a fridge or ice on the whole floor, and overlooked a PARKING LOT! (Obviously it didn’t have a hot tub either). Our room looked like the kind of room you book when you're in town for some unexpected reason, like business or a funeral. It was the cheapest one at the resort. No ambiance. Certainly no romance. Needless to say, it wasn’t a great trip. It turned out to be a waste of gas, mileage, and time.

We weren't really able to do much about it at the time because they checked us in so late. So when we got home, we wrote them a nice letter, explaining what had happened. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we expected SOMETHING—maybe some time at the spa? Instead, we received no response. Nothing. I was shocked.

Frankly, I think we dodged a bullet with this place and we will never try staying here again.

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry you did not enjoy the complimentary stay at the beachfront resort we provided for you. I apologize for the inconvenience, we would have loved to host your anniversary stay with us. Unfortunately, the unforeseen maintenance issue gave us no other option but to pay for your stay elsewhere. We hope to get a second chance to exceed your expectations in the future.

I had read that some of the rooms were out of date. So I was a bit concerned about that. But our room was fine. Certainly everything was not pristine and new, but since we were backed up against the woods, it felt appropriate to be a little rustic. We stayed in the Mythical Suites. Our room was cozy and clean. The tub felt great. And there was plenty of privacy.

The grounds were beautiful. We enjoyed just walking around especially in the evening. Being from the city, it was nice to see stars! There's a really nice walking/biking trail behind the resort that goes all the way to the beach. The staff was friendly. The spa area is great and we loved our couples massage.

The restaurant is over-priced, as hotel restaurants usually are. But you are not far from Pismo or San Luis Obispo for other dining options.

Notes
-The bar closes at 9pm. We would have like to stay out til at least 10 on a weekend.
-The mineral springs can damage jewelery. Take it all off first. There is a warning near the tub, but who reads those! My boyfriend's silver/pweter bracelet was damaged.
-If you stay in the West Meadow suites, keep in mind that they are clear across the highway from the main resore area. It's nice becuase of the quietness and privacy. But it's a walk from your car (you have to take golf carts with your luggage).

Honeymoon stay Forced to walk in wedding dress and he tuxedo to room across the highway in far west meadows because their golf carts were not charged We were told that golf carts were available 24 hours a day If you had a heart attack NO VEHICLES could even access rooms Staff never offered an umbrella as it was drizzling No compensation was offered and only got an apology after five mad calls This is a very unsafe and unacceptable location to have no ambulance or firetruck access It is a building on pipes over a bug laden floodplain I dont know how they even built these legally No safety access Better safer stays in Avila and Sycamore tubs are nothing different or better than elsewhere Stay elsewhere

Congratulations on your recent nuptials. I apologize for the inconvenience the rain caused during your stay. Our bell service is available 24 hours a day, there was an unfortunate delay of 15 minutes noted during your stay with us due to a maintenance repair. There is a short walking bridge that crosses Avila Beach Drive that takes you to our West Meadows Suites in our nature reserves. There is emergency access and the area is very safe and beautiful with bungalow style suites alongside the tranquil San Luis Creek. Thank you for your comments, we take all of our guest comments very seriously and strive to exceed our guests expectations.

Beautiful grounds - great location - amazing spa for massages. Nice to have your own private hot-tub, but room furnishings look pretty tired. The West Meadow rooms are nicer & offer a bit more privacy. Breakfast at the restaurant was very good. Although expensive it was a relaxing way to celebrate our anniversary & beautiful Avila Beach is only a 5-min drive.

We usually know what to expect each time we visit Sycamore Mineral Springs……….expecting a great outdoor hot tub with sulfur water right outside your room, but a lousy room to stay in. We had heard from the front desk when we made our original reservations that they had renovated the rooms in the “Harmony” building, which we usually request because not all buildings and rooms have true sulfur water, which this building does. Well, the rooms were as lousy as before. I have attached some pictures of how badly things are maintained.

Let me first say that we have visited this resort probably a dozen times or more during the last decade. Why do we return? The grounds of the resort are very beautiful and there are great trails that you can access directly from the place. You can walk the paved Bob Jones trail all the way to town and then enjoy the town and beach of Avila. You can hike a somewhat challenging trail behind the resort that rewards you with beautiful views of the ocean. This trail will loop around the area providing beautiful views all around. The resort also has fairly large pool to enjoy. Now, the main reason we come here is to soak in the hot tubs all night long, in the complete privacy of our own patio…..that is the appeal. Now, is it worth almost $500 for a Friday & Saturday night stay with tax and a silly “resort” fee of $14 per night (so, you get to attend a free yoga class with that mandatory fee)? If you are staying just for the accommodations, in either the Harmony or Adventure buildings, you will feel very, very cheated. The bed was very nice, including the linens & pillows and the carpet was fine, too……that is about it. I would say that just about everything else is poorly maintained or badly designed.

The staff at Sycamore are okay. Over the years, we have run into very rude employees, but also very nice ones, too. The attitudes are far from 4 or 5 star resort quality, but acceptable.

You will see by my pictures that the rooms are not very nice. Chipped nightstands, tables, TV stands……bathrooms without a single hook to place a towel or robe (nothing by the hot tub either)….no shelves to place any toiletries…..funky shower handle that makes the water hard to adjust……..shower liner that looks bad and is dragging in the tub……single pain windows that look like they are 20 years old…….cracked wood that can be harmful to you around the hot tub……cracks in the door that is suppose to give you privacy when you are in the hot tub if people are walking in front of your room…. rusty latches that are very difficult to securely close your front door in the hot tub area……no chairs around the hot tub…….paper thin walls.

We received an email survey form the General Manager Charles, two days after we checked out. I thought that was very impressive. But, after I listed the areas that need improvement and that I could even send pictures of the problems, I never received a return response (over 10 days now) and at this point, I’m sure I won’t hear from them……they just really do not care since they have plenty of customers who are willing to pay high rates to have a real sulfur hot tub. Their survey was just a formality that they send out without caring what the responses are. It’s amazing that you could spend time writing to them about things they need to improve on…..spend your own valuable time in doing so……and it really is a waste of time and energy.

Now, I have helped manage resorts in the past, so I can be a bit overly critical and I also understand just how difficult it is to manage employees and make guest happy. But, I also know that you at least try your best, and this resort does not. If you want some luxury, they have some nicer rooms and suites that are even more costly, but they do not have sulfur water in their hot tubs.

Dear frequent guest, thank you for your loyalty over the years and positive comments about our resort and the beautiful grounds and activities you were able to enjoy during your stay. We appreciate your suggestions for improvement. We did receive and reply to your comments and immediately asked our maintenance staff to address them. Our standard rooms are in our historic building which did recently get updated including new beds, linens, carpet and bathroom. We will be updating our other furnishings in the near future. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again in the future.

The hot tubs were the best perk of Sycamore Springs. The rooms were slightly outdated but clean. Parking was difficult and awkward. The dining at Sycamore Springs was not worth what we paid but the service was good. Not too far from Avila Beach which was fantastic!!
