My wife and I have been looking for an authentic middle eastern restaurant in San Leandro for some time and recently came across Shami Restaurant on East 14th Street. At first glance, this place resembled a fast food restaurant; in fact, we've driven by this place on numerous occasions without given it a second thought. One day we decided to give it a try and we're happy we did. This is a sit down restaurant and family operated opened some time this year (2013).
I have eaten this kind of cuisine for many years and my wife grew up with this and this is authentic cuisine at a very reasonable price. We've been to this place 3 weeks in a row, trying various dishes to compare to food we've tasted in during our travels to the middle east. They're very close.
We tried shawerma, falafel, hummus, babaghanoosh, kadaif, vimto, to name a few dishes. Service is leisurely. They're still working out a few kinks, but this place is worth a visit.
