“Great place to learn of the California Missions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

There are 21Spanish missions on California that are more than 200 years old. The results for the indigenous people were generally disastrous, but this is a story we all need to know and understand. I particularly like this one because you can get more of the feel for what it was like in the early days. It is just a few miles off HWY 101 and easy to find. Great place to take kids. We were with a nine and twelve year old and they enjoyed their visit. Both had visited other missions and one had visited this one before. Highly recommend it for the history. BONUS, Alfred Hitchcock fans will recognize the location.

“An interesting attraction”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

I originally visited this town 40 years ago at the recommendation of an historian who said that it had the flavor of an authentic Mission town. Every time I have taken visitors to it, they have been enchanted. Some even compare it favorably to their "native village." The park attraction has improved greatly over time as the exhibits have been arranged and updated to explain more about the diverse cultures. It is definitely worth a visit.

“Early California Mission History on display”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

This place is both authentic and close to San Francisco and the Bay Area. Compared to many California Missions, this is the most authentic of them all and continues to celebrate mass since 1797!

Close by are nice shops and great places to east. If you like California history, have a 4th grader in school in California, or just want an early 19th century experience, this is the place to visit!

“Deteriorating Piece of History”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Mission San Juan has an aura of age and sadness. This was one of the places where the local Indians were used as slaves and it feels sad and tired. The deferred maintainance undoubtedly contributes to the feeling. This is not a happy, exciting tourist spot...but it can start some useful conversations if you have children.
