I stayed at the Fairmont a year ago with a youth group. We were in town for a youth convention - so there were A LOT of kids at this hotel.
The good: The hotel is just lovely. Our room was massive, the bathroom massive (I was in a room with 5 young ladies so this was greatly appreciated), there was a vanity area, good closet, and very large hallway. And all of the space was beautifully appointed. The beds were soft and the bedding was delicious and I couldn't have loved the space more. (Until the five young ladies made every corner of the room an out of control mess.) The hotel lobby and lounge is gorgeous and a lot of fun! The hotel is in a great location, easy walk to the convention center, easy walk to lots of fun places to eat and the train. It's across the street from a great park and fountain. It's just a very cool area.
The bad: Now these are just picky, but they still bothered me for the level of place we were staying in. Our rooms were not ready on time. After traveling a long distance and being extremely exhausted, it was an excruciating wait. Also, there were five people in our room. They knew this, they provided the air mattress and we paid for that extra person. But I had to call housekeeping every single day to have one or two more towels delivered. This is really a nuisance after about the third day. Our bathrobe disappeared after the second day never to be replaced. Our air conditioning didn't seem to work very well. (They did get an engineer up to our room ASAP and got it mostly working.) But the one that really got me is that we worked with the concierge to find a nice place to have dinner with these 12 kids. The concierge was very nice although she didn't seem to quite understand what we were going for. (She kept wanting to send us to chain restaurants when we were looking for something unique to San Jose.) We finally picked out a restaurant, she said she would call and make the reservation and call us if there were any problems. When we showed up at the establishment , they didn't have our reservation. They were a place that didn't accept reservations. Well, that was embarrasing and aggravating. I know we were a group with a bunch of kids, but we were paying customers and I would have expected to be treated with the same level of care as other customers. It may have just been that particular concierge. The others seemed more professional - she is just who happened to be on duty when we walked up. All in all, these are fairly minor.
We did love this hotel and the location. I would not only stay here again, but I would definitely look forward to staying in a Fairmont in other locations as well.
