“Love the charm& the staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

Second favorite place to stay when on business in San Jose. The staff is just exceptional : knowledgable, helpful, and they know the area. There's only one drawback: thin walls. It's an old building, beautifully maintained, but noise can be a problem.

we were assigned a 6 th floor room facing inside, the bathroom is handicapped equipped.
room is 20 * 15',
large bathroom.
except for a small LCD tv with std resolution, other furniture is 5 star level.

some minus
heating fan in bathroom (which seems to only source of ac in whole hotel room), sounds like a hair dryer when thermostat activated.
room refrigerator sounds like a muted hair dryer when on.
housekeeping don,t replace. tea bags, empty toiletries during cleaning

From the moment I arrived this hotel sang the song of some other time. When I pulled up, there was a sign for valet parking, but the valet was nowhere to be seen. So, I locked the car and went in to the front desk to check in. Not a huge deal but not what you'd expect in San Jose across from the convention center.

The room is OLD. The furniture is out of the fifties - literally. And the TV is a 90s version with a college days remote to change channels. No movies on demand, limited cable. The bathroom is also showing its age. From the pseudo wood tone counter top with no space for toiletries to the ancient tile floor that has seen better days, I've honestly had bigger bathrooms in NYC. Finding an outlet is an adventure. Basically, you get one that is at the base of a lamp. If you want a second one, you have to move some furniture to get to them, and then they are at the baseboard, not at a normal level or in normal places. For example, the light next to the bed is powered via an extension cord that runs under the bed. Really.

Given a Marriott across the street, a Fairmont down the street, and a Hyatt around the corner, you've got better choices.

Had a reservation for two nights but cut it to one for this place and found an alternative.

I was here for two nights on a business trip downtown. It's just a quick taxi ride from the airport (~$25) and then you can walk to many businesses, San Jose State, or restaurants in the area. Business travelers will find the accomodations a bit cozy; the elevators and bathrooms are particularly small. My bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The TV worked well and there was a good size desk in the room as well. Lobby staff was attentive and they quickly hailed a taxi. Their excercise room had a few treadmills, bikes and free weights. Breakfast was delicious and reasonable for a downtown address. Valet parking is $26/day.

Room Tip: Choose one away from the elevators as the elevators have music that penetrates under the doors of ad...

I stayed at the Sainte Claire for 3 nights on business in January of 2013. Aside from the fact that San Jose was in the middle of a cold snap (it was 29 in the mornings), I really like this place. It's Old School but in a good way. It has a really nice lobby with plenty of seating and good WiFi. The room was small but clean with all the normal amenities for a business hotel. In a nutshell, I just really liked the look and feel of the place.

We stayed one night at the Sainte Claire on a stopover on our way home from Hawaii to Alaska. We arrived just after eight PM and were delighted to be given a complimentary upgrade to the Palm Suite. It was gorgeous and spotless. Very spacious with a large bathroom equippped with a double shower and big separate jacuzzi where we took a lovely soak after dinner. The king bed was very comfortable and the linens were very high quality. Folks at the desk were helpful, courteous and professional. We left wishing we had more time to spend. The ONLY drawback was that the trolley ran right below our window and was a little noisy. Take earplugs. It's also quite convenient to the airport.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the side where the trolley runs. It's a little noisy.

I was only here for one night, seeing a concert at Civic Auditorium (practically across the road), but found it a very nice experience. Yes, some of the features are a little dated, but that's to be expected in a historical hotel, and my room seemed like it had been updated fairly recently. It certainly wasn't dirty! The bed was probably the best thing - I slept like a log.

Location-wise, it's not bad - there's a light rail stop basically right outside which connects to the train station (it's the Convention Center stop, NOT Civic Center, Civic Center is a very different place to Civic Auditorium!).

A few downsides - the room service was incredibly expensive, so I got breakfast after I left, and the heating was extremely loud (I eventually turned it off and just bundled up under my blankets). But generally, it's a comfortable, pleasant location.
