“Inexpensive traditional food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

If you are a super fan of teriyaki chicken, don't miss this unassuming hole in the wall in San Jose's Japantown. Tender, well marinated chicken made daily. The smell of chicken perfumes the street. Very reasonable prices, lines out the door. No sushi. Yes. *No sushi.* Chicken Teriyaki & Deep Fried Shrimps with salad, soup and rice, $11. They have udon, japanese curries, and a little sashimi. Good tofu. This restaurant is sort of a mini-chain. They own locations in Menlo Park, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and the Kubota across the street (expensive but great sushi.) The Santa Clara location has sushi, noodles, and traditional teriyakis with no wait, so it's a nice place if you are visting the Kaiser Hospital across the street.

“A San Jose Japantown Institution”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Gombei is truly a San Jose Japantown institution, and going there is what makes a hometown visit complete for me. We've gone there early to get the big table at the back; it seats about 12, and groups smaller than this may have to share the table. Everything on the menu is reasonably priced. We usually get the deep fried tofu to share. My favorite is the beef teriyaki set since I can't get this in Tokyo, but all the other dishes I've seen look good, too. The whiteboard has the specials of the day; the last time I went I was surprised to see adobo on it! As others have noted, all members of your group must be there before the group can be seated, and Gombei takes cash only.

“Very Competent Japanese Food in San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

I have been eating at Gombei for decades and have never had a bad meal there. The food is consistent, portions adequate and service is quite good. There is always a line at lunch and the other restaurants in the area serve as their overflow for those who don't want to wait. That would say everything that needs to be said.

“Authentic Japanese Diner-Not a Sushi Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

Don't make the mistake of thinkng that Gombei is a sushi bar. It's a traditional Japanese diner; you go there to eat! It's located on the western edge of Japantown San Jose. I have been going there for years and I have never been disappointed. It's a small reataurant so during busy times you may have to wait or elect to sit at the counter. The selection of food is very good. You can chose from more well-known Japanese dishes such as teriyaki beef/chicken, or check the menu on the backwall for more tradtional Japanese food. The San Jose Gombei does not sell sushi (they do have sashimi). You will need to visit one of the local sushi restaraunts located close by. The portions are large and tasty. Having eaten Japanese food all of my life I can say that the food is tasty and authentic. The decor is plain but it is always clean.
