“Not your average Tavern”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Hi-Life was great. From the charismatic bartender, David, to the excellent food everything was on point. This is such a charming place with an old school cash register, menu on the wall, and great staff. The food was excellent, they had a great selection of steaks and the sauce that comes with the bread is phenomenal. They stop serving at 9pm and promptly close up so make sure you get there early. Oh, and "watch the step.. its a doosey!"

“Always a crowd pleaser”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Hi-Life is always a go to when we have guests in town. The steaks are out of this world, the service is great and the bread is always warm! This is an old school sort of establishment... you walk in, go up to the doorway and look up- you'll see the menu. Tell the person at the door what you would like and wait for them to call your name. You will be seated in a room with tables and a grill- thats right, you can watch them grill! Yes, you may smell like you've been at a BBQ but trust me once your belly is full you will not care.

“Old-Time Fun Steaks and Ribs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

This place had=s been here literally forever, and is a downtown legend. Basic menu - ribs, steaks, chicken - all come with potatoes, salad, and garlic bread. A fun place to check out, and very close to the Arena is you have Sharks tickets or are going to a concert. Does not take reservations - you sign in upon arrival, so give yourself enough time if you have plan afterwards.

“Great hole in the wall barbecue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

It's a great place for barbecue, but don't try to go there before a Sharks game unless you come several hours beforehand. Come for the meat. The salad is so-so.

“Great BBQ in a unique setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

This is an old standard for San Jose. Excellent food. You order in the Bar and wait for a table. Place has an outstanding local reputation. Excellent value. If you are looking for a quiet place to eat, this is not it. No reservations so it is good to get there early as it fills up fast and waits can be long. Parking can also be challenging. Unless you are a masochist, do not even think of eating here during a sports or concert event at the San Jose Arena which is almost next store.
