Went here with a business team lunch and found the food great. I had the special tri-tip sandwich, yum!

“Harry's Hofbrau - Wunderbar!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

I have been coming here since I was a child and they were located in downtown San Jose. I hung out here as a young adult and would spend hours in their high-backed chairs eating, drinking and smoking (when it was legal to do so) with friends. Now as a mature adult I still crave this place. Entering the doors between huge sides of beef and turkeys (not recommended for vegetarians) roasting in the front windows, the aroma hits you and involuntary salivation begins. YUM!

I usually order only one thing when I come here.....their ultra fresh, rare roast beef sandwich, double-dipped on sweet french roll with a side of bleu cheese dressing for dipping. I AM IN GASTRONOMIC HEAVEN!!! Oh, and their homemade dill/garlic pickles are the best! Friends really enjoy various menu items, but I just can't resist my favorite. If I really feel the need to veer from the usual, I'll go so far as to order the hot roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. Also VERY yummy.

These sandwiches are truly the "real" thing!

“Harrys is a step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Harrys has been around forever, and has bridged the gap from being the dinosaur of a forgotten era, to being a destination. They don't have blowfish sushi, they don't have gluten free cashew cheese pizza, doughnut burgers, or Korean tacos. They don't deal in trends, and while the enchiladas are so mild, I joke that they are made with catsup, most of the food there is quite good and a superlative value.

The food is served grade school style, that is to say, you get a tray, put a plate on it, and mosey along past the sneeze guard, and choose either a complete dinner, a sandwich prepared to your specs, or individual items you want. It is NOT an all you can eat, but the portions are quite ample.

All the meats are very good, so you can't gowrong with a Turkey, Corned Beef, Ham, or Roast Beef dinner, or any of those in a sandwich.

My personal favorite are the Frankfurters, which are actual Frankfurt style sausages, with the natural casing that kinda pops when you bite it. There are legions of side dishes to accompany...my favorite is the purple kraut.

Thestaffis always very nice and accomodating. Many of the guys who serve the food are hispanic, and because the food is rather German/Czeck/'50sAmerican in style I sometimes ask them what they would have for a change of pace. The results have been wonderful corned beef and jalepeno torpedos which were philharmonic blends of meat and heat. (only do this when it's not too busy, it's not really on the menu)

Nothing goes better with sausages, or aspicy sandwich better than beer, and while Harrys has a complete bar, it is known for it's vast selection of beers.

In the '60s and '70s places like Harrys were not uncommon esp in Northern California. (Tommy's Joynt on Van Ness and Geary in SF remains as an icon to them) In those days they were known for cheap dinners, and for the beer selection. The thing is, in those days, if a place had Lowenrau Dark Tuborg, Guinness and Becks, that was a great selection. The past few years have seen the craft beer world explode, and while the South Bay is sadly not a big part of this trend, Harry's has become the vanguard in this arena.

Kevin, the Mgr does a great job of getting a staggering selection of beers of every sort, and his . selection changes alost daily. They have most people's traditional favorites as well.

Beyond the tasty food, and great value. it's Kevin's dedication to introducing his enthusiastic following to the new beers, and eduating them about taditional ones which sets this place miles ahead.

“High end Cafeteria Style Establishment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Harry's Hofbrau is a San Jose tradition. The restaurant serves excellent comfort food; chicken, turkey, beef, pasta, plus soups, salads and desserts. The establishment caters to seniors (affordably-priced meals). Only major problems I have is the restaurant runs out of their roast pork around 5:00 each night. Also, for a place that caters to the elderly, there is only limited handicapped parking available throughout a large parking lot. It still remains an excellent choice for lunch or dinner. Take out service is excellent, too.
