“attempting to revitalize”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Old Town has seen better days. That said, some of the old buildings are sweet and a few independent stores are doing a nice job attempting to revitalize a stretch of a few blocks. . Combined with a visit to the Steinbeck Center, the drive over highway 68 to reach Salinas was charming. I was there in the spring and the Lupens bloomed, transforming the hills with a carpet of blue flowers...Don't expect much, but the 2 last blocks before the Steinbeck Center seemed to be the more interesting ones.

First Awakenings restaurant served good, moderately priced lunches. Quality and number of shops were few and far between.

“Old Town Flavor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

Salinas' Old Town is definitely a place to relax and enjoy a taste of small town America. There are home made craft stores, antique stores, and coffee shops along Old Main Street, making it a pleasure to stroll through any day of the week!

“Exploring Oldtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2012

Old town is a 3 block stretch of Main street in the center of town. It mainly consists of restuarants and little speciality stores. There are 2 coffee houses, an antique store, a wine tasting room, a children's theatre, and a large multi screen movie theater ( the Maya) also on this street. the National Steinbeck Center is at the end of Oldtown.
The area is unique in that many of the buildings are quite old- some being around when Steinbeck was a boy, including his childhood home which is a few blocks away.
On the first Friday of the month there is an artwalk, and shops stay open and art is displayed and live music performed in some venues.
On Saturday mornings, there is a farmer's market held in the parking lot one block off of Main St.

Old own is not a large area, but it is one of the more interesting places to explore when in Salinas. It's a good place to get a bite to eat, look for gifts, and learn about John Steinbeck.

“Downtown Salinas is a dump.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

Gang and crime is pretty bad in Salinas. I would also avoid the Northridge Mall. Go to Monterey Pennensula for a safer nice environment that is not crime ridden. John Stienbeck would be dissapointed.
