“Really good food in a toned down atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012 via mobile

If you love trying out different culinary experiments, textures and flavors, this is great. Portions were small, but compatible with a 10-12 course dinner, nothing less, nothing more.

Sophisticated flavors from simple combinations, such as in the pumpkin mole ricotta which was almost an ice cream, and harmonized flavors from complex combinations, such as in the spiny tail flax avocado caviar.

Service was good but not great. Ambiance is toned down, and I found it a little bit noisy for a 3 star, they could work to separate the tables a little more.

In summary, go for the food. And forget some of the reviews which bash the chef's creativity, this is what it is supposed to be, if you want simple stuff go eat at home.

“Excellent Dining Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Excellent tasting menu with numerous amuse bouches. According to Nathaniel, the director of food services, the staff researches the guests and tries to match serving staff to the guests. Olin, our headwaiter, had lived and worked in the DC area, including the Inn at Little Washington, for many years. We knew many of the same places, including Sperryville and Graves Mountain Lodge. We mentioned to Olin that we had dined at Benu the previous evening. Chef Kostow came out and spoke to us personally and commented on our experience at Benu. We did not do the wine pairing because we had gotten drunk on the 17 course wine pairing at Benu the previous night. We settled for 2 half bottles – a local small producer white to start and a Montalcino red for the meat courses. All in all, a wonderful dining experience.

“Significantly overrated and overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

It is hard to imagine what Michelin is thinking when it awards *** to the Restaurant at Meadowood. The food is overly ambitious, overly fussy, overly complicated, and overly precious. In a word it is struggling to be inventive rather than good. On top of it all, the portions were laughable. A fish course with the trout filet measuring 2"x2"? A cheese "course" with a disk of cheese 2" in diameter. The meat course was massively over salted. I cannot understand the award of three stars; I cannot imagine this earning two stars. Most European one star restaurants I know blow this one away on quality.
