I was in Napa this weekend with my wife and two other couples, and late Saturday afternoon we were able to book a reservation for dinner at 8:30--perfect after wine tasting and a late lunch. We never made it to the wine list because we all enjoyed our cocktails so much and ordered a second round (tip: arrive early and sit outside at the lovely bar). The stars of the show are the "mini ham sandwiches," which are woefully under-merchandised on the menu. These prosciutto laden beauties come three to an order, and we all agreed that we could have made a meal out of a few orders. Request to Farmstead: please open up early on weekends and serve these guys out front with an egg a top. You'll have lines in the parking lot.
The rest of the menu was pretty typical if you live/eat in San Francisco, and that's not a bad thing. Farm fresh ingredients prepared well are always welcome. The salmon, trout, and burger, were all very good. The "potted pig" was heavy but a crowd pleaser. Alas we had no room for dessert. All in all, Farmstead is a good bang-for-your-buck dining experience in the sometimes too-precious Napa. Just don't forget to order the sammiches!
