It's our second visit to the Residence Inn at Cal Expo. The first visit was a year ago. One noticeable thing is that the desk staff seemed to have changed in a year. This time I found that one of the clerks was disinterested in her job. I called to alert them this time that we had a flat tire and would not be able to arrive until after midnight. Calling on my cellphone I was answered by an unprofessionally sounding clerk who seemed sleepy. She placed me on hold for 10 minutes telling me she needed to check with her coworker about my late check-in request. When my call was picked up another staff member answered and I had to repeat the story to her. What happened to the first clerk? Did she go home and forget that I was still on hold? Or did she go back to her nap?
The 2004 visit we had a studio with two beds. The stay was uneventful although the room is not too spacious.
This current visit we reserved a penthouse suite. It's spacious but the second room is a loft that's up a long, steep staircase. There are two full bathrooms available: one upstairs and one downstairs. The kitchen, as standard, had a full-size fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, and stove. There were utensils but either they were stolen or lost as they were mismatched. Same thing with the glasses and cups. There were miscellaneous kitchen tools and utensils, but I noticed no pots.
The upstairs loft room gets warm as it's so high up and Sacramento has 90 and 100+ temperatures during July. There are two ceiling fans, one upstairs and one downstairs. It appears that our a/c unit was not working well because it was not so cool although it was turned on to the max. and the ceiling fans were working at the same time.
The downstairs room has a Murphy queen bed. When you pull down the bed from the wall it takes up the area near the desk and small dining table. There is definitely more space in a penthouse suite as compared with a studio. But the furniture is placed awkwardly and you need to be careful not to bump into them.
As to maintenance we felt that the room lacked some maintenance. For example, the upstairs closet sliding doors were coming off the sliding device. Also the Murphy bed had a very sharp metal edge because the protective cover came off. Because the bed is pushed out to the walking area nearby one of us gashed one of our feet on the metal edge.
The breakfast which is complementary is allright. It's a hot breakfast with eggs (powdered eggs), potatoes, make your own waffles, cereals, oatmeal, assorted pastries and bagels and toast. Somedays they serve (frozen not from scratch) pancakes and sausages. There's also coffee, tea, and a juice and soda dispenser.
In short, the Residence Inn at Cal Expo is a comfortable place to stay and much more decent than the Best Western Expo Inn across the street. However, if I did not have a discounted rate for the penthouse suite, I would check around for another suite/hotel to stay.
