“Old Riverboat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

We spent the night in a stateroom on this old river boat now docked in Old Sacramento. It was more than we expected and the staff was excellent in every way.

In the morning we had breakfast in the Pilot House Restaurant with a wonderful view of the Sacramento River.

This was another thing that my wife and I can mark off our bucket list. We highly recommend this hotel, restaurant and staff.

May not be on the Mississippi but with the ambience of old town, we could not have asked for anything more.

Room Tip: You can either have a city view or river view. Many different options of rooms.

Loved the charm. This is the only way I would stay on a boat, ... one that is firmly attached to the dock as I tend to be very motion sick. But aside from the movement the Delta King had all the charm of an old steamboat. It was meticulously renovated and transported us back in time to a more leisurely life. The rooms are small but well appointed. The staff is all very friendly, and the value (since we were using a Travelzoo voucher) was excellent. Breakfast was included and was very good. It was served in the dining room with a lovely view of fishing boats chugging along the river. My only complaint was that the trains that went by during the night were quite noisy when they blew their whistles.

Room Tip: Choose a river view room.

we took advantage of a Travelzoo offer for one night's stay including vouchers for breakfast.

we arrived early and our room was ready :). however, the room's view of the river was obstructed by a lifeboat and the room did not have curtains on the window to block the morning sun coming through the slats of the blinds.

the towels were awesome. the pillows were terrible - they were okay when i fell asleep, but when i awoke in the middle of the night, it felt like i was sleeping on a rock. the a/c stopped working around 2am and came back on at 6am - causing fairly sleepless morning.

wifi speed and connectivity was excellent.

i would definitely recommend delta king hotel for a night's stay. downside: the boat is securely attached/docked to the shore. there is movement on the water.

Room Tip: if you're given a river-view room on the 4th deck, ask for one with an unobstructed view of the...

We bought into the whole hoopla of staying on an old river boat, paid over $140 to do it, and realized soon after check-in that this was going to be a one time deal. The river boat is located one block off Old Sacramento, and though a boat it may be, it was so well fastened to the shore that one could just as well think one's on land. When you get on, you slowly realize that no view on this boat is an actual view. One direction faces dirty water. And while the other "faces the city," the boat turns out to be too low in the water leaving you seeing barely more pavement and concrete. The Delta King has valet parking available on the intersection of K Street & Front Street, but you have to call Delta King for them to send someone out to do it. From there, you cross the old railroad track, a wooden ramp, and then board the boat. Check-in did not go smoothly -- we paid for a "city view," but realized quickly one need to be on the top floor in order to see anything. It took me raising my body and the young lady at the desk to call some manager for them to agree to change our room. The process took about twenty minutes while the bellboy stood in obeisance while we handled the situation. These bellboys have to go up and down narrow metal staircases with heavy luggage (due to the lack of an elevator) - so please tip them accordingly. In our room - which was not very large - but to be expected of a river boat - there were very nice amenities. The bed was nice and comfortable. We found chocolates on our pillows. There was a TV inside one of the dressers. The bathroom was designed in a very cool fashion. The toilet was old-school. The water pump was hung over the toilet with a long chain that needed to be pulled down to flush. The sink could barely contain your two hands (but the hot and cold knobs were looking interesting) and the shower was a stand-in shower. Though it had good water pressure, the enclosure must have been broken as a mini-flood greeted you post post shower. We spent little time walking around the boat and did not find it in completely pristine condition (dirt and dust settled on various surfaces). We retired back to our room and had a good night's sleep (but do remember that these rooms are located very close to the actual deck where people walk - so you are bound to hear some noise). Breakfast on the boat was a prefixed breakfast served to you by a waiter (so a tip should be given -- don't forget your wallet in the room). Our option was one juice, one coffee, and a plate of eggs, bacon or sausage, and a muffin. Overall, our recommendation is that you just walk on board for free, take your pictures (it's nice at sundown) and leave.

If you are looking for a fun place to stay in Sacramento, The Delta King is it. If you are looking for a large room, then keep on looking. The rooms are tiny, like you would find on a cruise ship of days gone by. The doors are smaller than what you'd find in your home, so be ready to duck if you are close to 6'. The beds are full size and you really do have to move carefully if there are 2 of you. But, the service from the front desk is amazingly awesome! Everyone was really friendly, helpful and went out of their way to ensure that our stay was not only good but awesome! We didn't plan on spending a lot of time in our room so the size wasn't an issue. It's a romantic and fun place to stay and we thoroughly enjoyed the quirks of The Delta King.
There are small bistro type tables and chairs on the deck just outside the rooms to enjoy the river views, a glass of wine or the city lights at night.

Room Tip: river view rooms definitely have a nice view and are probably a bit quieter than the Old Town side.

The location was perfect! We were here for our anniversary and a night away. The breakfast was included, it was a very heavy breakfast and even though it was good I would love to have had a healthier alternative. Otherwise the stay was absolutely perfect!

This was our second stay on the Delta King and was even better than the first! We got a nice corner room this time, much roomier and very quiet. We had a beautiful view of the river and lighted bridge. They hosted our 40th class reunion and the food was phenomenol, the waiters they assigned us were so friendly and helpful, we will definitely recommend this place to everyone for any occasion, large or small, their staff will make it work! If you've never stayed on a river boat before, let this be your first....it's a fun and unique experience!

Room Tip: Choose a room either facing the river or one of the end corner rooms, much roomier!
