Had a one night lay-over in Sacramento on our way to Ashland, OR. Stayed at Amber House and it exceeded our expectations. The staff was fantastic, offering cookies and drinks at turndown in the evening, bringing early morning coffee/tea to the room prior to breakfast, and serving possibly the best B&B breakfast we ever had. The area around the hotel is quiet. You park on the street but parking was plentiful. Plenty of quaint places to eat within easy walking distance. Wouldn't stay anywhere else whenever I'm in Sacramento!!
The B&B has two houses across from each other. I like the layout of the main house best.

We were in town for a wedding and decided to spend the night in the Wordsworth room. The Inn is beautiful and the people working there are very nice and accommodating. Our room had a wonderful bed and a charming, light filled bathroom. We opted (nice to have multiple options) to eat breakfast on the porch. The food was delicious and we enjoyed watching many hummingbirds as we ate. Amber House is located in a wonderful neighborhood with fun shops and restaurants within walking distance. If you are in Sacramento, this is the place to stay.

We stayed in the Emily Dickenson room and had such a great time. The room was beautiful - the bed was so comfortable we didn't want to get up. We had Eggs Benedict for breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice. The staff is amazing!
And the location is terrific - we walked to a really good Mexican restraurant and had marg's then walked over to another restraurant for a wonderful dinner. We would highly recommend the Amber House to any of our friends and family!

Friendly Service But Frustrating

The people who work here are top-notch in their attempt to provide great service. They are extremely friendly and sincere. However, they did make some mistakes in our one-night stay. They were little things, but added up; for instance, forgetting toilet paper in the room, forgetting the bath soap, even forgetting the cookies when they brought cookies and coffee up (they remembered the coffee). Perhaps this was all because they were tending to a wedding that occurred the day we stayed there.

As for the room itself, we were in room 12, and it was small, and the bath wasn't terribly big considering this was one of the largest rooms. The furnishings were dated (brass), and the shower head was way too low (I'm 6 ft and had to hunch under the shower head to shower).

This said, the deck out back was great and the location is nice. It's a very quiet part of Sacramento in walking distance of some good eateries, and a short drive to all the tourist spots in the city. All in all, I wouldn't stay again but it wouldn't be a bad place to stay.

I've never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before and I've always wanted to. I've always been drawn to older homes, woodwork, cotton, trees, and poetry. In this way my stay at the Amber House was perfect. I don't go for many of the details some might; although this does not mean those details were not taken care of at the Amber House. I look more for character, soul, and something you can't quite name.

The moment I walked up the steps to the Inn I felt a feeling of relief wash over me. I'd been hauling baggage around all morning and we were in the introductory fase of the first heat wave of the year. There I was at the front door, I rang the bell. From then on I was so well taken care of. I had to arrive early because check out of the hostle I'd stayed at the night before was earlier than check in. They were so kind; they offered to put my bags in my room when it was available and sent me off on my way to a wonderful lunch right down the street. (The Amber House is in Midtown, one of my favorite parts of Sacramento; there is so much character, so many trees, it's beautiful)

I came back and got the first look at my new home for the next two days. I was absolutely pleased. I stayed in the Wordsworth room and the white and blue colors, the windows and light, the bed... all was inviting and brought me into a feeling of peacefulness and crisp relaxation. The bathroom was large and the victorian soaking tub is beyond words. Huge.

Every evening I was served hot tea and chocolate cookies... Every morning a two course breakfast in my room... I could have had it anywhere... but I was feeling the desire to be private... alone. Next time I'd like to spend more time in the rest of the house and the garden. There is the most amazing little sitting room/library with good books... and it's all so inviting. There is an amazing porch with a swing chair and tables to sit and relax at.

I didn't get a chance to look at the other house across the street, the 1895 Dutch revival house; the garden is behind that house. I hope to stay in that house one day too. Infact I would like to stay in every room! I have to say that I made a good first choice in the Wordsworth room; it has a king size bed which would have been very nice to share with a loved one... and the tub for me is better than any jet tub.

The only thing lacking was a better view. But honestly... I paid no more attention to that than but for one moment when I first arrived.

Each room has a little journal for guests to write in. If you see the uniqueness of each room you realize the genius behind that... On my last morning while I ate my amazing breakfast I read through notes guests had written... and some brought tears to my eyes. We all travel for different reasons. Mine was to 'get away' and to experience something new and special... and I did that. I wrote my note, and packed my things, and said good bye.

Before I end this review I want to mention the amazing staff. They took such good care, were so thoughtfull and had wonderful attitudes. It wasn't too much and it wasn't too little, just perfect. And... last but not least... I heard that you can get married there...

One day if it ever happens... which I hope it does... I would be so pleased to experience that special day there at the Amber House... You have to go and see it, experience it! I can't wait to go back.
