“Funky but great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

We had dinner at the Virgin Sturgeon for the first time in many years. The location on the water can't be best; although the hike through the airplane ramp is an e-ride. The decor is really funky and untouched over the many years since I was here last. The view outside made up for the quaint ambiance inside. The surprise was the quality of the food. I had a salmon with a great sauce that was more like French cuisine than the river food you would expect. This place should be discovered by the "diners and dives" guy on television. It was a fun experience.

“A good watering hole with character and excellent service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014 via mobile

We think the service was good because it was not busy. However our server was outstanding. The food choices are limited. It was too early to be out of ribs. The linguini with muscles was watery and not Horst time of serving. Not on my list of places to return to.

“The View”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

The Virgin Sturgeon isn't the trendiest eatery in Sacramento, but it has a view that many others would love to have. To get to the restaurant/bar, you walk down a steep ramp (that gets steeper as the river level drops) and enter through a sliding door. On a recent visit, we were seated at table near the gas fireplace heater and overlooking the Sacramento River. Our waiter was friendly and prompt. The menu is mainly seafood. We began with the homemade cream of potato soup and the Cuban black beans. Both were quite tasty. We ordered the sauteed panko-crusted snapper that came with rice pilaf and fresh veggies. The meal was fine though nothing spectacular. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is a locals crowd in the bar, which is separated from the dining room area, to watch sports so the noise level is tolerable, at least the evening we were there.

“Funky casual with 'yawning' service and food that needs to grow up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

As other reviewers have said, the Virgin Sturgeon is indeed a local haunt that redefines 'funky'. Located at a permanent dock on the river, this could be a 'pearl' --- if the owner woke up and grew up to make better u$e of what is truly a unique location. As it is, the quality of the food --at least the day that friends and I ate there-- was as muddy as the river with the lunch time service unexceptional at best. This may have been due to the fact that only one server was on to cover all the tables.
One further note: If you have a problem with mold, make sure to hold your breath when walking down the steep enclosed ramp.

“What a hole! Does not deserve one star.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

This place is horrible. From the ramp from the street to the loud, drunk patrons, to the (maybe? 21 year old) girls running around and then obsessively spinning on their bar stools like they just had their very first beer. One lush asked my boyfriend for a taste of his drink. We then went inside. These patrons were so loud and drunk, it was just pathetic as outside. I like to go out once in a while and have a couple of drinks but damn, these people were obnoxious, loud, ugly drunks. I will never come here again. This place had absolutely no redeeming qualities.
